November 25, 2021 | Women's Basketball
Tech will clash with Ball State (Friday), Old Dominion (Saturday) and New Mexico (Sunday)
KATY, TEXAS – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders travel to Katy this weekend for the Van Chancellor Classic, hosted by Van Chancellor and the City of Katy at the Merrell Center.
A perfect 4-0 on the season for the first time under second-year head coach Krista Gerlich, the Lady Raiders open the three-game, three-day event on Friday afternoon with a 4 p.m. clash against MAC foe Ball State. The matchup will be the first between Tech and BSU in school history.
Action continues Saturday, when the Lady Raiders host C-USA's Old Dominion for a 1:30 p.m. matchup at the Merrell Center. Saturday's contest will be just the second all-time matchup between the Lady Raiders and Monarchs. Tech will look to even the all-time series at one, as ODU took the inaugural matchup back in 1998.
Tech closes the three-game weekend with a 4 p.m. clash against the University of New Mexico. The Lady Raiders and Lobos are meeting for the first time since 2017, and for just the third time in eight years. Tech leads the all-time series 9-4.
LAST TIME OUT FOR TECH:
The Lady Raiders are coming off the most complete victory of the 2021-22 season thus far, an impressive 83-57 victory over Texas State. The victory was made possible by a massive 29-point fourth quarter, and a strong third quarter that saw Tech held the Bobcats to just nine points and to just 2-of-11 shooting. Tech led for 38 minutes and eight seconds overall.
In that contest, second-year freshman Khadija Faye exploded for a career-best 22 points on perfect 9-of-9 shooting, while forward Taylah Thomas added 10 points and 13 rebounds for her second double-double of the young season. In the fourth, Tech was shot a blistering five-of-seven from 3-point range. Three of the makes were by reigning Big 12 Freshman of the Week Rhyle McKinney who had 15 points. McKinney nailed all three of her attempts from behind the arc in the fourth.
