Red Raiders Fall in Extras at Razorback Invitational

Texas Tech dropped games against North Dakota State and Southeast Missouri in eight innings.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark – Texas Tech (4-5) fell in eight innings to North Dakota State (1-4) before dropping another eight-inning contest against Southeast Missouri (2-6). The Red Raiders tallied 18 total hits in the losses on day two of the Razorback Invitational.
The Red Raiders move to 1-2 on the season in extra-inning games.
Texas Tech 4, NDSU 5 (8 inn.)
A two-out rally in the third got Texas Tech on the board first. Yvonne Whaley singled over the head of the first baseman and Karli Hamilton singled through the right side of the field, moving Whaley to third and advancing to second on the throw. A walk from Zoe Jones set up bases loaded for Breanna Russell who doubled down the third base line to plate two runners.
Tech added another run in the bottom of the fifth off an RBI single on the right field line from Ellie Bailey sent home Jacee Hamlin who came in to pinch run for Jones.
North Dakota State responded in the sixth to tie the game at 3 all sparked by a leadoff home run to right field. The Bison followed the home run with a double and advanced the runner to third on a ground out. A bloop single scored the runner and brought the game within one. A single to center field scored the tying run.
The Bison had an opportunity to take the lead in the top of the seventh after a leadoff double put a runner in scoring position. The Red Raiders made a pitching change, bringing in Kamryn Caldwell (0-1) in relief of Erin Edmoundson who went six innings giving up seven hits and striking out three. The next Bison batter singled to left field but a laser throw from Whaley got the runner at the plate.
A double to left center scored runner from first in the top half of the eighth inning to give NDSU the lead. Another run would score on a hard shot to third that was stopped by Russell, who made the throw to first for the second out. The Bison would take a 5-3 lead into the bottom half of the inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Alanna Barraza belted her second home run of the weekend, a solo shot over the left field wall, to bring the game within one. The Red Raiders could not find a tying run, falling in game one 5-4.
Texas Tech 3, SEMO 5 (8 inn.)
A two-run shot in the top of the first gave Southeast Missouri the early lead.
The Red Raiders had an opportunity to drive in runs with bases loaded and two outs in the bottom half of the inning. Bailey sent a hard shot to left center, but the SEMO fielder made a diving catch to end the inning and preserve the 2-0 lead.
SEMO added a third run off a sac fly that scored a runner who reached base on a leadoff double.
Tech broke the shutout in the fourth scoring one run on an RBI single from Barraza to make it 3-1. The Red Raiders had a chance to add more runs with bases loaded and two outs as Jones sent a hard shot to right field that was caught over the shoulder for the final out.
The Red Raiders fought back in the bottom of the sixth after singles from Barraza and Burton put runners on first and second. A sac bunt from Whaley moved both into scoring position with two outs for Hamilton, who tripled to center field plating both runs.
Neither team was able to push another run across and for the third time this season, the Red Raiders headed into extras.
A pair of leadoff walks and a double steal put runners on second and third with no outs for the Redhawks in the top of the eighth. An RBI single to left scored one run as runners remained on second and third. A sac fly to right field plated one more run to make it 5-3 before the Red Raiders got out of the top half of the inning.
Tech went down in order in the bottom half of the inning to end the game and fall to 4-5 on the season.
Morgan Hornback went seven innings for the Red Raiders, giving up four runs on five hits before being replaced by Edmoundson in the top of the eighth. Edmoundson (2-2) finished the inning allowing one run on one hit and striking out one.
Hamilton tallied four hits and two RBI on the day while Barraza, Whaley and Burton each recorded three hits.
