Texas Tech heads into Sunday’s opening round having won two-consecutive tournaments
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's golf team will look to continue its recent success Sunday at the Bruzzy Invitational hosted by North Texas at the Lantana Golf Club, which is located just south of Denton in the DFW metroplex.
Â
As a team, Tech is coming off back-to-back team titles for the first time since the 2011 spring season when the Red Raiders won the Mountainview Collegiate followed by the Knights and Pirates Invitational. Tech now has 15 team titles under head coach JoJo Robertson, who is in her 12th season leading the program. Â
Â
The Red Raiders have competed in the Bruzzy Challenge once previously during the 2019 spring slate, finishing in third place as a team, while Sofia Garcia notched a third place individual finish at 6-under-par. Tech was scheduled to return to the tournament last spring before the 2019-20 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Â
Tech will be without Garcia throughout the tournament as the junior will be traveling for the Augusta National Women's Amateur, which is slated to begin Thursday. Garcia, coming off consecutive top-five finishes, leads the Red Raiders with a 72.2 stroke average over 26 rounds this season.
Â
The two-day, 54-hole event will have a new host course this year in the Lantana Golf Club, a par-72, 6,421-yard course that has been the site to many amateur tournaments in the past. The tournament will feature a pair of 8:30 a.m. shotgun starts with 36 holes to be played Sunday followed by a final 18 on Monday.
Â
The Red Raiders, up to No. 30 in the latest Golfstat rankings, will be the fifth-highest ranked program in a stout 16-team field that also includes No. 7 Oklahoma State, No. 17 Houston, No. 21 Texas and No. 29 Iowa State.
Â
Live coverage will be available throughout the Bruzzy Challenge via Golfstat.com.
