Montgomery’s start, Jung’s three-run double in the seventh fuel eighth straight win
HOUSTON – No. 10 Texas Tech baseball held off a ninth-inning rally from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to close the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic with a 4-3 win Sunday at Minute Maid Park.
Â
The Red Raiders (8-3) held a 4-1 advantage going into the ninth, but the Islanders (4-7) cut the lead to one and put the go-ahead run in scoring position with one out. Tech got a Ryan Sublette ground out and a diving grab up the middle by Cal Conley to seal the victory.
Â
Pitching dominated the afternoon as Tech held a 6-4 advantage in hits up until the final frame, and the two pitching staffs combined for 25 strikeouts. Connor Queen (1-0) earned the win for the Red Raiders in 2.0 shutout innings of relief. He followed a quality start from Mason Montgomery, who allowed one run over 6.0 innings with nine strikeouts. His six innings and nine strikeouts were both career bests.
Â
Jace Jung supplied the majority of the offense for the Red Raiders with a three-run double in the bottom of the seventh that broke a 1-1 tie and gave Tech the 4-1 lead. Jung finished 1-for-3 with the double and a walk and has now hit safely in nine straight games.
Â
Easton Murrell had the only multi-hit performance for the Red Raiders, who have now won eight consecutive games. The win improves Tech to 8-4 all-time at the Shriners Hospitals College Classic as the Red Raiders posted a 3-0 showing at the event for the first time in four appearances.
Â
In a matchup of Leander, Texas, natives, Islander starter Hayden Thomas (0-1) matched Montgomery through six innings and finished at 119 pitches in the game. He took the mound in the seventh already over 100 pitches, and allowed a single to Easton Murrell and a pair of free passes to load the bases. With two outs, Jung sliced a fly ball into the gap in left center for the game-winning RBI.
Â
TAMUCC's Itchy Burts led the Islanders at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. He opened the scoring with a solo shot in the second inning before Tech answered in the third as Parker Kelly scored on a passed ball.
