April 11, 2021 | Women's Golf
Cecilie Nielsen picked up Texas Tech’s lone win Sunday in a 3-1-1 loss to No. 7 Oklahoma STate
LUBBOCK, Texas – The No. 27 Texas Tech women's golf team fell to No. 7 Oklahoma State, 3-1-1, in the opening match of the Cowgirl Match Play event Sunday afternoon at the Stillwater Country Club.
Â
Cecilie Nielsen was the lone Red Raider to record a point on the day, topping Hailey Jones, 3 and 1, thanks in part to a strong front nine and two-straight wins late in the round at the par-4 16th and par-5 17th. Nielsen dropped the opening hole to Jones before tying the match on the very next hole and eventually building as high as a four-hole lead by the par-4 8th.
Â
Nielsen's lead dropped as low as by one hole heading into the 16th, but she rebounded with back-to-back birdies. Sofia Garcia, meanwhile, managed a tie after 18 holes in a tight match with Isabella Fierro that marked 12 all squares, including in eight of the final nine holes.
Â
Oklahoma State's three wins came in the middle of the lineup as Lianna Bailey topped Amy Taylor, 5 and 4, while Anna Dong fell to Rina Tatematsu, 4 and 3. Gala Dumez made a late push to tie her match after 15 holes, giving the Red Raiders a chance to force Garcia to break her tie but Han-Hsuan Yu followed with consecutive wins at the 16th and 17th to seal the match, 2 and 1.
Â
Tech will be back in action Monday morning when the Red Raiders take on an Oklahoma team that defeated Tulsa by a similar 3-1-1 score in Sunday's other match. Tech will be matched up against Tulsa for the final round later in the day.Â
Â
The tournaments champion will be determined by the best record of the four teams. Coverage of rounds two and three will be available via Golfstat.com.
