April 16, 2021 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech women's tennis team fell short of upsetting No. 2 Texas on Friday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center, as the Lady Raiders dropped the match, 4-1.
Â
Texas Tech took the doubles point in one of the team's better doubles performances of the year, winning on courts one and three to take a 1-0 lead to open the match; however, the Longhorns stormed back in singles to clinch the victory.
Â
After Texas struck first with a win on court two, Lady Raiders Lisa Mays and Kaitlin Staines picked up a big win on court one, defeating 14th-ranked Lulu Sun and Kylie Collins, 6-4. The win moved the pair to 9-5 overall this season. Not only was the victory the third ranked win of the season for the Texas Tech tandem, but it was also the first top-20 doubles win for the pair.
Â
The point was secured for Tech on court three, as Metka Komac and Nell Miller knocked off Marta Perez Mur and Charlotte Chavatipon, 6-4, to put the Lady Raiders up, 1-0. It marked only the second match playing together this season, and moved the duo to 2-0.
Â
In singles, the Longhorns earned a couple of straight set wins to take back a 2-1 advantage.
Â
After taking her first set, 7-5, Metka Komac fell on court six in three sets to make the Longhorn lead, 3-1, before Olivia Peet also dropped a three-set match on court five.
Â
As the match was decided, Lisa Mays had just forced a third set against No. 25 Anna Turati on court one and was tied, 1-1, in the decisive frame. Margarita Skriabina was on the verge of forcing a third set against No. 77 Charlotte Chavatipon, leading 6-5 in the second on three.
Â
The Lady Raiders will look to end the regular season strong, as they play host to No. 10 Baylor in the home finale on Sunday at 2 p.m.
