
SOCCER PREVIEW: vs. Cal State Fullerton

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech will continue its home stand at the Walker Soccer Complex by hosting Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m. on Thursday and UTSA at 7 p.m. on Sunday following a 6-0 victory over Abilene Christian in its last game.
The Red Raiders (3-0-1) have now outscored their opponents by a 9-1 margin and have a 66-16 shots advantage through four games. TTU has scored eight unanswered goals coming into the weekend. CSU Fullerton (0-3-0) is coming off a 1-0 loss to No. 10 Santa Clara on Sunday after a 3-0 defeat to No. 5 UCLA and a 2-1 season-opening result at San Diego.
"We know these are going to be tight ones on Thursday and Sunday," Texas Tech coach Tom Stone said. "This will be the hardest weekend we've had. Both teams are an upgrade from what we've seen and they're going to make it hard on us. There will be less chances and the conversion rate needs to be good. We're still in that work-in-progress phase where it has to be about us. We're training us, not about the other teams right now. We need to be the best version of ourselves."
Texas Tech has recorded a shutout in three of its first four games with a 1-1 draw at UC San Diego being the lone goal allowed. The Red Raiders are in the middle of a four-game home stand with a 1-0 win over Hartford before the 6-0 win over the Wildcats. The team is now 3-0 at home stand is now 91-26-10 at the Walker Soccer Complex. The Red Raiders are 2-0 all-time against CSU Fullerton with a 2-1 win in California in 2012 and then a 1-0 win over the Titans in 2013 at home in the last matchup.
TTU exploded for six goals in the win over ACU with Kirsten Davis and Macy Schultz having two each. Davis now has 34 career goals, while Schultz has nine. A junior from Colorado, Schultz had scored three goals as a freshman and three as a sophomore for the Red Raiders before scoring three through four games this season. Davis added two assists to her two-goal performance and now has 86 career points which is third in program history behind Janine Beckie's 130 and Kristy Frantz's 108 career points. A fifth year senior, Davis has recorded two goals in six games in her career through 78 games played and currently leads TTU with nine shots on goal, while Schultz has five shots on goal.Â
Macy Blackburn scored the first goal in her career and added two assists in the win over ACU. A freshman from Keller, Blackburn assisted on the first two goals of the game and then scored in the 50th minute to give the Red Raiders a 5-0 lead. She also recorded an assists in the season-opening win over UTEP with Davis scoring the goal in the 1-0 win.
Hannah Anderson and Cassie Hiatt continue to lead the Red Raiders defensively in a season where only eight shots on goal have been made through four games. ACU managed four after UTEP had opened the season by not being allowed a single shot by the defensive unit. Anderson, a junior from Plano, has played every minute this season. Goalkeeper Madison White recorded four saves against ACU and now has seven this season and 96 in her career. White has played all 380 minutes for the Red Raiders this season and now has 12 shutouts in her career. Schultz, Blackburn, Anderson, Hiatt, Jordie Harr and Jen Rose have started each of the first four games. Harr has four shots and Rose two coming into the matchup against the Titans.Â
TTU is 5-0-0 all-time against UTSA, including a 4-0 win in 2015 in the last matchup. The Red Raiders have outscored UTSA by a 18-1 margin in the five games.
TEAM CAPTAINS: Davis and Cassie Hiatt are serving at team captains for the second straight season. A defender from Parker, Colorado, Hiatt has been a dominate player for the Red Raider defense for three seasons beginning with a Big 12 All-Freshman campaign to get started. Hiatt earned All-America honors as a sophomore along with All-Big 12 First Team. Davis, who was selected No. 13 in the NWSL College Draft, decided to return to school to play her fifth season at Texas Tech. She had 16 goals as a junior to earn Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and All-America honors. Davis is currently third all-time at Tech with 34 career goals behind Kristy Frantz (41) and Janine Beckie (57).
THE TEAM: Texas Tech has 33 players on its roster with 20 returners and 13 newcomers. The Red Raiders have 11 freshmen on the roster along with adding transfers in Eva Hurm (Notre Dame) and Sierra Castles (Long Beach State).
OUR LEADER: Tom Stone picked up his 162nd win with the victory over Abilene Christian. A Dallas native who graduated from Duke, Stone is in his 15th season leading the program after roles at Denver, Duke and Clemson. He has led the Red Raiders to seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including to the Sweet 16 in 2014. Tech won the 2015 Big 12 Tournament and has had eight double-digit win seasons under Stone's leadership.
OUR GOLD MEDALIST: Texas Tech welcomed Janine Beckie back to Lubbock on Saturday, August 14 after the former Red Raider helped lead Canada to the gold medal in Tokyo. Beckie, who is the all-time leading goal scorer in Tech history with 57, is currently playing professionally with Manchester City FC. Canada won the gold medal with a shootout win over Sweden in the championship game.
UP NEXT: The Red Raiders will travel to Arizona to play in the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson with games against Arizona and Arizona State next weekend. TTU plays Arizona on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 9 p.m. (CST) before playing Arizona State on Sunday, Sept. 12. The Wildcats are currently 1-1 on the season with a 2-1 win over Northern Arizona after a season-opening 2-0 loss to Utah Valley. Arizona will host LSU and Cal State North Ridge this week before hosting its home tournament.
