The Red Raiders fell to Colorado 29-31, 21-25, 25-18, 14-25 Friday morning in Boulder
BOULDER, Colo. – Texas Tech dropped to 6-3 on the season, falling to Colorado in four sets Friday morning to open the Buffs Invitational.
Four Red Raiders reached the double-digit kill mark in the loss. Kenna Sauer recorded a double-double with a career-high 16 kills while adding 10 digs. Brooke Kanas 19.5 points were best on the team, the senior tallied 14 kills and six blocks, three of which were solo. Reagan Cooper and Karrington Jones each added 10 kills. Alex Kirby logged her second double-double of the season with a season-high 45 assists and 17 digs. KJ Adams and Alex Torres each added double-digit digs with a team-best 18 from Adams and 12 from Torres.
HIGHLIGHTS
The first set was a battle, with 17 ties, seven lead changes and seven set points between each side. The Red Raiders took a three-point lead at 20-17 with back-to-back blocks that forced a timeout from the Buffs. Out of the timeout Colorado answered with a three-point run to tie the match back at 20. Colorado had the first set point up 24-22, but the Red Raiders rallied for three points to create a set point of their own at 25-24. The two sides continued to fight off set points until the Buffs strung together three consecutive points for the 31-29 opening set win.
Colorado used the momentum from the first set to take an early 12-7 lead in set two. The Red Raiders used a five-point swing to tie the set and a four-point rally to take a 19-17 advantage, but Colorado used an 8-2 run to win the set 25-21.
Tech extended the match with a 25-18 set three win. An ace from Kanas gave Tech a seven-point advantage at 19-12 and forced a Colorado timeout. The Buffs and Red Raiders traded the next several points until a kill from Caitlin Dugan ended the set. Tech hit .390 in the set with 20 kills, five coming from Kanas who also added an ace and a solo block in the frame.
The Red Raiders stayed within a couple of points of the Buffs in the fourth set until Colorado tallied 11 unanswered points to bust open a 23-11 advantage. Tech could not overcome the deficit, falling in the final set 25-14.
