The Red Raiders start conference play with a five-set loss to Kansas (25-15, 22-25, 25-18, 19-25, 7-15)
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Red Raiders dropped a five-set battle to Kansas to open Big 12 play Friday night at United Supermarkets Arena.
KJ Adams set a career-high with 27 digs, adding five assists. Kenna Sauer's 18 kills matched Kansas' Jenny Mosser, leading the way for their respective squads. Reagan Cooper tallied 14 kills on a .306 clip with three blocks. Alex Kirby collected her fourth double-double of the season with 41 assists and 11 digs.
Tech opened the match strong, winning the first set 25-15. The Red Raiders took the lead first and never surrendered it in the set, forcing an early timeout up 10-5 after back-to-back kills from Sauer. Tech continued to push the lead, winning five of the next seven points to force a second Jayhawk timeout at 15-7. Caitlin Dugan tallied a handful of kills down the stretch and the Red Raiders used a 3-0 run to wrap up the set.
The Jayhawks responded winning a tight second set to level the match at one set apiece. With the Red Raiders leading 22-20 late in the frame the Jayhawks took a timeout. Kansas rallied for the next five points out of the break for a 25-22 set win.
Three early aces from the Red Raiders gave Tech an 8-4 lead as Kansas used its first timeout in the third set. A couple of attack errors led to a second Jayhawk timeout with Tech ahead 15-10. Kansas pulled within two out of the timeout, but the Red Raiders strung together four straight points with kills from Sauer and Cooper to lead 21-15. The Red Raiders used an 8-2 run to close out the second frame 25-17 and take a 2-1 advantage in the match.
An 11-2 run helped Kansas edge out a 25-18 set four win and force a decisive fifth set. With the Red Raiders leading 13-11, the Jayhawks rattled off 11 of the next 13 points to take a 22-15 advantage. The Jayhawks finished the set with a solo block from Caroline Crawford.
The Jayhawks dictated the final stanza 15-7, winning the last four points to claim the match.

The Red Raiders get a chance at redemption Saturday night at 6 p.m. for the second match against the Jayhawks. Saturday night is Greek Night and senior middle blocker Brooke Kanas will be celebrated with a special senior recognition ceremony during the match.
