The Red Raiders swept the Bears 25-12, 27-25, 25-16 Wednesday night in Greeley
GREELEY, Colo. – Texas Tech volleyball started off the Colorado road trip with a midweek sweep of RV Northern Colorado, handing the Bears their first loss of the season Wednesday night in Greeley.
The Red Raiders hit .340 as a team, the second highest mark this season, while tallying 11 blocks for the fifth double-digit block match of the year. The Red Raiders service game was strong, recording a season-high seven aces with a couple each from Caitlin Dugan and Alex Kirby.
Reagan Cooper paced the Red Raiders with 10 kills on a .421 hitting clip. Kenna Sauer came up just shy of a double-double with nine kills and nine digs, adding three blocks. Dugan and Brooke Kanas each tallied seven kills and Dugan led Tech with four blocks.
HIGHLIGHTS
The Red Raiders came out of the gate swinging, taking the first set 25-12 in dominant fashion. Tech used an eight-point run early to separate themselves for the early 13-4 lead. The Bears clawed their way back into the set, pulling within four on a service ace. The Red Raiders responded by tallying the final nine points of the match to claim a set one win. Cooper tallied seven kills in the first set as the Red Raiders hit .448 as a team with no errors.
UNC put up a tough fight in the second set, answering each of Tech's runs with a run of their own. The Red Raiders opened a four-point lead at 19-15 that forced the Bears to take a timeout. Out of the break UNC used a five-point run to take the lead at 20-19 and force a Tech timeout. The Red Raiders rallied to create a set point at 24-21 but the Bears fought off three set points to tie the match at 24. Even at 25, a kill from Cooper created set point for the fourth time and an attack error from the Bears gave Tech a 27-25 set two win. The Red Raiders tallied 18 kills in the second set, six of which came from Sauer.
Tech handled its business in the third set, establishing a 14-6 lead that forced UNC to call its second timeout of the set midway through the frame. The Red Raiders pushed the lead to 11 with four straight points that ended in an ace from Kirby. UNC attempted to pull back into the match, but the Red Raiders held off the late surge to take the third set 25-16 in a sweep of the Bears.
