Adams adds Jaylon Tyson to signing class

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech head coach Mark Adams has announced the signing of Jaylon Tyson to an Athletic Scholarship Agreement. A transfer from the University of Texas, Tyson will join the Red Raider program this semester but will not be eligible to play until the 2022-23 season.
A freshman from Plano, Texas, Tyson originally signed with Texas Tech on November 11, 2020 before deciding to attend Texas and play for the Longhorns. With the one-time NCAA transfer rule, Tyson can begin practicing with the Red Raiders this semester but will be unable to play until next season. He maintains four years of eligibility.
Tyson played in eight games as a reserve for the Longhorns this season where he averaged 1.8 points and 1.1 rebounds per game. He entered the transfer portal on Dec. 27, 2021 to reopen his recruitment which led back to Texas Tech.
Tyson went to John Paul II High School where he helped lead the school to its first-ever TAPPS class 6A state championship during his junior season. Individually, he was ranked as the No. 34 prospect in the nation by Rivals, No. 35 by 247 Sports Composite and No. 42 by ESPN. As a senior, Tyson led John Paul II HS to a 26- record and the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) Class 6A state semifinals. He earned first-team TAPPS all-state and district Most Valuable Player accolades after averaging 22.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game.
Tyson averaged 23.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game during the run to the state title as a junior. He led the team to a 40-1 record and also earned first-team TAPPS all-state and district MVP honors.
Adams has now signed Lamar Washington, Pop Isaacs and Robert Jennings II to the 2022-23 signing class.
