January 18, 2022 | Men's Basketball
LUBBOCK, Texas – Bryson Williams scored 16 points and Kevin Obanor went for 15 points and eight rebounds as No. 18 Texas Tech turned a close game in the first half into a 72-60 blowout win over No. 15 Iowa State on Tuesday at a sold out United Supermarkets Arena.
The Red Raiders (14-4, 4-2 Big 12) improved to 11-0 at home and evened the season series against the Cyclones (14-4, 2-4 Big 12) who had earned a 51-47 win in the first matchup on Jan. 5 in Ames, Iowa. Tech led 26-23 at halftime with the three-point lead being the largest advantage of the first half before establishing a 23-point lead with six minutes to play. Davion Warren scored 11 points to give Tech three players in double figures in the game where they finished shooting 43.5 percent and limiting ISU to only 36.5 percent while forcing 16 turnovers. Â
"We try to make every team uncomfortable," Texas Tech coach Mark Adams said. "But with Iowa State, not only are they good on defense, but they have an offensive scheme that they are just constantly moving and they use their high post a lot. We were trying to pressure them and deny some of those easy passes so we could slow them down. We were able to do that pretty well at their place and kept the same game plan here at home."
The Red Raiders will return to action against West Virginia at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the USA before playing at No. 7 Kansas next Monday in Lawrence, Kansas. Tech is currently 4-2 against ranked opponents this season after its win over the Cyclones and also earned a 75-67 victory over KU on Jan. 8 in the first meeting between the teams.Â
Williams led the Red Raiders in scoring for the sixth time this season and now has 92 career games with double-figure scoring after going 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. He also added three rebounds in the game. Obanor was just two rebounds short of his first double-double of the season after having five offensive rebounds and three on the defensive end. He finished the game shooting 6-for-9 from the field and 3 of 5 at the free-throw line. Obanor had 30 double-doubles in his three seasons at Oral Roberts and has now scored in double figures in 73 games in his career.
"As a shooter nobody wants to miss shots, but you have to find a way to impact winning without shooting the ball," Obanor said. "So I try to just rebound, defend, and do the little things that it takes to win."
Warren finished the game with 11 points and four rebounds, while Kevin McCullar had seven points, six rebounds, three steals and three assists. Adonis Arms led the Tech reserves with nine points after going 4 of 4 from the free-throw line, while Terrence Shannon, Jr. returned to the starting lineup and had four points. Daniel Batcho added four rebounds and two points, while Marcus Santos-Silva had four points and four rebounds.
Tech took its first double-digit lead of the game at 40-30 with Obanor grabbing an offensive rebound, making a putback and then hitting a free throw. The close first half was now in Tech's control and grew with a 9-0 run for 53-37 lead with Obanor once again hitting two free throws to push the lead to 16. A Shannon dunk off an assist from McCullar gave the Red Raiders a 60-40 lead before the largest margin of the game came at 65-42 on a Williams free throw.
Caleb Grill led Iowa State with 17 points from the bench, going 4-for-8 on 3-pointers for the Cyclone who finished the game shooting just 5 of 26 from beyond the arc. Izaiah Brockington added 12 points and nine rebounds while Jaden Walker scored eight points. ISU finished the game shooting 23 of 63 and fell to the Red Raiders after having knocked off Texas last Saturday.
Tech led 26-23 at halftime with Williams leading the team with eight points, while Arms and Warren had five each. Shannon made his first basket of the game on a layup with one second remaining in the half for the three-point advantage. Obanor and McCullar led the Red Raiders with four rebounds. Tech and ISU played a tight first half with Tech's largest lead being three and Iowa State's two points. ISU had a 14-12 scoring advantage in the pain but was only 1-for-10 on 3-pointers. Tech went 2-for-11 on 3-pointers and shot 38.5 percent from the field while holding ISU to 31.0 percent shooting going into the second half.
"We talked before the game that this was two of the top teams in the country going at it toe-to-toe," Adams said. "I was excited to see our guys respond and how hard everybody played."
The Red Raiders are now 20-21 all-time against Iowa State having won six of the last seven meetings. Tech is 13-6 against the Cyclones in Lubbock.Â
