
Red Raiders fall to Kansas in five sets

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Seniors Kenna Sauer and Reagan Cooper posted double-digit kills, but the Texas Tech Red Raiders fell in a tough, five-set match to the Kansas Jayhawks, 25-20, 13-25, 17-25, 25-23, 8-15, on Saturday afternoon at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena.
Sauer led Tech (14-5, 3-3 Big 12) with 15 slams, while also adding nine digs and three blocks. Cooper followed with 11 slams and Karrington Jones was right behind with nine of her own. In addition, Jones tallied a hitting clip of .500 and totaled four blocks.
Brooke Kanas collected eight kills and a season-high tying seven blocks. Junior Reese Rhodes had herself a match with 35 assists, six digs and three blocks. Caitlin Dugan added six kills and four blocks, pushing her career total to 197 total blocks.
Senior Alex Torres tallied a season-high of eight digs against the Jayhawks, while Maddie Correa had seven of her own. As a team, the Red Raiders collected 12.0 blocks, making it the eighth time of the season with double-digit blocks and second in a row.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One
The Red Raiders and Jayhawks traded points in the beginning of the set, tying at 5-all before Tech went on a 3-0 run highlighted by a kill from Jones and a block from Dugan. At 8-8, Tech would win four of the next seven points thanks to blocks from Kanas and Sauer and a kill by Cooper for a 12-11 advantage. The Red Raiders started to take control of the match at 16-16 when Sauer put down a kill, followed by a block from Kanas and Dugan. Tech won four of the last six points to win the set, 25-20, on a Sauer back-row slam.
Set Two
Kansas went out on an early, 3-0 run until Kanas slammed one down to end it. However, the Jayhawks were able to capitalize on some Tech errors to take a 10-3 lead. Tech would go on a 3-0 run to try and get back in it thanks to a couple kills by Jones and an error on KU. Kansas responded, though, and closed out the set by a score of 25-13 to even the match.
Set Three
The Red Raiders took a 3-2 lead to begin the third set on kills from Kanas and Dugan, but the Jayhawks would answer back with a 5-0 run for a 7-3 advantage. The Red Raiders kept chipping away, eventually going on a 4-0 run highlighted by slams from Sauer, an ace from Dugan and a block by Rhodes and Kanas to make it 17-14, Kansas. But, the Jayhawks recovered and would win the set by a 25-17 score.
Set Four
Texas Tech began the fourth set with a 5-4 advantage on blocks from Jones and Dugan and slams from Sauer and Dugan. The Jayhawks went on a 4-0 run to follow, taking an 8-5 lead in the process. The Red Raiders answered back by winning four of the next five points to tie it at 10-10 on a Jones kill. Kansas regained the momentum after claiming three-straight points, but Cooper put down a kill to spark a 3-0 run for the Red Raiders, which included an ace from Currie Marusak and another kill from Dugan. Tied at 18-18, Maddie O'Brien would post back-to-back aces to give Tech a 20-18 advantage. Kansas would retake the lead, 22-21, until a Dugan kill and back-to-back blocks sparked a 4-1 run to force a fifth and final set, 25-23.
Set Five
Kansas started out the fifth set strong as the Jayhawks took a quick 7-3 lead. The Red Raiders tried to cut into the lead on errors from KU and a kill from Rhodes to make it 9-6. But, Kansas responded by winning six of the next eight points to take the match, 15-8.
Notables
- Freshman Currie Marusak picked up her first career service ace in the match.
- Brooke Kanas tied her season-high with seven blocks against the Jayhawks.
- Kenna Sauer posted her team-leading 18th match of the season with double-digit kills (15), and has only had one game this year without double-digit kills.
- Karrington Jones collected a hitting clip of .500, which is the second-best mark for her this season.
