Big 12 tabs Wolff Co-Specialist of the Week
November 14, 2022 | Football
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech senior kicker Trey Wolff was recognized on Monday as the Big 12 Co-Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference announced. It is Wolff's second honor from the Big 12 this season.
In the Red Raiders' 43-28 win versus Kansas, Wolff was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts to help push Texas Tech to victory. Wolff split the uprights from 30, 33 and 51 yards, marking the fifth time in his career he has successfully connected on three field goals in a game.
Wolff's 51-yard field goal came as time expired to close the first half, giving the Red Raiders a 27-21 lead at the break. It matched the longest field goal of his career as he, ironically, connected from the same distance in a similar situation at Kansas State earlier this year. Wolff is now 15-of-18 on field goal attempts and a perfect 32-of-32 on PATs this season as he ranks 15th in the FBS now in field goals per game (1.5). He is now the only Big 12 kicker to successfully make multiple field goals this season of 51 yards or longer. The successful night moved Wolff into a tie for 10th all-time on the Texas Tech single-season chart, while his 36 career field goals moved him into sole possession of eighth place in program history.
Sharing the special teams honor with Wolff this week was West Virginia's Oliver Straw. In a field-position game, Straw had six punts for 263 yards, averaging 43.8 yards per punt in the Mountaineers' win over Oklahoma. He had a long of 51 yards, placed four inside the Oklahoma 20-yard line and two within the Sooners' 10-yard line.
This is the fifth Big 12 weekly award of the season for the Red Raiders. Quarterbacks Behren Morton and Donovan Smith have both been recognized by the league. Morton was the newcomer of the week following his performance in the Red Raiders' win against West Virginia and Smith was tabbed the league's top offensive performer after the win over Houston. Wolff and Reggie Pearson Jr. were both recognized for their efforts on special teams and on defense following Texas Tech's win over Texas.
Texas Tech improved to 5-5 and 3-4 in Big 12 play with the victory last Saturday against Kansas and will now head to Iowa State seeking bowl eligibility. The Red Raiders return home Nov. 26 for the regular season finale against Oklahoma. It was recently announced the Red Raiders and Sooners will kick off at 6:30 p.m. in the last game at Jones AT&T Stadium this season.
