Correa posts career-high 31 digs against Kansas State

MAHATTAN, Kan. – The Texas Tech Red Raiders fought hard against the Kansas State Wildcats, but fell short in a five-set thriller, 21-25, 25-18, 25-23, 13-25, 11-15, on Wednesday night at Bramlage Coliseum.
Three Red Raiders posted double-digit kill performances as Reagan Cooper led with 15, Kenna Sauer tallied 13 and Brooke Kanas added 11. Sauer also collected a double-double in the match by adding 17 digs. Reese Rhodes had a 51-assist night while recording 15 digs for her 12th double-double of the season.
Libero Maddie Correa had an impressive night after eclipsing over 500 career digs with 31 on the night. Her 31 digs are a career high and is tied for ninth in single-game digs. Freshman Paige Mooney had a career night also after tallying a career-best 12 digs.
Defensively, Kanas led with four blocks followed by Karrington Jones with three of her own. Jones now totals 339 career blocks and ranks sixth all-time in program history. In addition, the Red Raiders had their first 100-dig performance as a team this season with 102 digs against the Wildcats.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One
Kansas State took an early 7-4 lead in the set before the Red Raiders won four-consecutive points on three kills from Jones and an attack error by the Wildcats to lead, 8-7. Kansas State clawed back, eventually taking a 15-11 lead heading into the media timeout. Texas Tech didn't back down, scoring five of the next seven points highlighted by blocks from Kanas and Williams and kills from Rhodes and Kanas. The Red Raiders would tie the set on a Kansas State error, then took the lead, 19-18, on a block from Jones and Cooper to force a Wildcat timeout. But, Kansas State would go on a run to claim the set, 25-21.
Set Two
Just like the last set, Kansas State took the lead at the beginning by a 7-4 score. The Red Raiders answered back when they went on a 5-0 run thanks to slams from Jones, O'Brien and Sauer to take a 9-7 lead. Kansas State got a couple points back, but Texas Tech responded with another 5-0 run when Sauer, Kanas and Cooper put down some kills and Sauer added an ace, taking a 15-10 lead. Texas Tech pulled away after winning four-straight points for a 19-13 advantage, then would end the set on a 6-2 run to claim it by a score of 25-18.
Set Three
The third set saw a lot of back-and-forth action as both teams tied 12 times before heading into the media timeout. Trailing 8-6, the Red Raiders went on a 3-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back aces from Rhodes, to take a 9-8 lead. Kansas State answered back and was able to win two-consecutive points for a 15-14 advantage. Kanas would slam down a kill to stop the Wildcat momentum and even things at 15-15. Tech capitalized on three-straight errors from the Wildcats to take an 18-17 lead, then went on a 4-0 run to go up 22-19. Kansas State fought back to tie the set at 23-23, but Tech won the next two points on an error by Kansas State and a block from Kanas and O'Brien, taking the set by a score of 25-23.
Set Four
Kansas State came out firing in the fourth set, taking an early 9-2 lead. Cooper would stop the Wildcat run with a kill of her own, but the Wildcats kept their momentum to lead 15-6 and force a Texas Tech timeout. At 19-8, Texas Tech would win four of the next six points on kills from Williams, Lexie Collins and Currie Marusak to cut into the K-State lead, but the Wildcats would close it out and force a fifth set by a score of 25-13.
Set Five
Both teams opened the fifth set trading points. Tech would take a 2-1 lead on kills from Sauer and Kanas, then go up 5-4 when Cooper slammed down a kill. Cooper then tied it up at 6-6 with another kill, but back-to-back blocks by Kansas State gave them an 8-6 advantage. The Wildcats were able to keep their lead for the remainder of the set as they pulled out the win, 15-11.
NOTABLES
- With three blocks on the night, Karrington Jones now has a career total of 339 blocks and ranks sixth in program history.
- After collecting 31 digs against Kansas State, Maddie Correa eclipsed the 500-career dig mark and now has 525 in her career.
- Correa's 31 digs are also a career-high and makes it her team-leading 18th double-digit dig performance of the season. It is also tied for ninth in single-game dig performances and ties for the fifth-most digs in a five-set match in program history.
- Freshman Paige Mooney posted a career high of 12 digs, which is also her first double-digit dig performance of career.
- After recording 13 kills and 17 digs, Kenna Sauer tallied her team-best 16th double-double of the year.
- Reese Rhodes added a career-high of three aces in the match.
- Rhodes also tallied her 12th double-double of the season with 51 assists and 15 digs.
