KNOW YOUR FOE:
Having not played a game since Nov. 20, Alabama State enters at 0-4 overall on the season. Thursday's game ends a four-game swing against Power Five opponents. That stretch began Nov. 10 against Georgia and also include games against Mississippi State and Aurburn. Â Alabama State is in a stretch of seven-straight road games, a stretch that will end on Friday when the Lady Hornets take on ACU. Â Alabama State has received 21 of its 45 points per game from Ayana Emmanuel and Jayla Crawford. A 5'9" guard from Florida, Emmanuel scored a season-high 18 points back on Nov. 10 at Georgia. Â The other Lady Hornet averaging in double-figures, Crawford is a senior from Birmingham. Crawford missed ASU's contest at Auburn back on Nov. 20. Â After going 12-6 in SWAC play last season, ASU lost 101-80 in the SWAC title game to Jackson State. This Season the Lady Hornets were projected to finish second in the SWAC, with Emmanuel earning First Team All-SWAC honors.
STORYLINES:
FOURTH QUARTER, OUR QUARTER:
The Lady Raiders are a perfect 5-0 this season when scoring 20+ points in the fourth quarter. So far this season the Lady Raiders have outscored opponents 127-102 in the fourth and final period this season. For the year, Tech is averaging 21.6 points in the fourth.
GOIN' BACK-TO-BACK:Â
For just the third time in school history and for the first time since 2003 , the Lady Raiders have had back-to-back Big 12 Freshman of the Week honorees. Freshman Bailey Maupin was selected last week (Nov. 21) while Jasmine Shavers earned Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors this week (Nov. 28). Shavers and Maupin join Erin Grant and LaToya Davis (2003) as the only set of teammates to win back-to-back freshman of the week honors. Shavers/Maupin and Grant/Davis join Melinda Schmucker/Keitha Dickerson (1997) as the only set of teammates all-time to win freshman of the week.
MONEY FROM THE LINE:
Entering Wednesday's games the Lady Raiders ranked fourth in the country in free-throw percentage and sixth in FTs made per game. Individually three different Lady Raiders are inside the top-100 nationally in free throws made. Freshman Bailey Maupin is 20th in the country with 35 makes, while Bre'Amber Scott is 71st with 27 makes. Maupin is also 22nd in the country in free throw percentage.
ALL SHE DOES IS WIN
After not losing all last season and just once during her junior season, true freshman Bailey Maupin has now lost just twice in her last three seasons of competitive basketball. The Gruver product is averaging 14.8 points on impressive 44/48/95 shooting. Maupin's 27 points are the most by a true freshman since Chrislyn Carr scored 35 points against Nevada (Dec. 15, 2018). Carr is the last true freshman to lead the Lady Raiders in scoring (17.9), and the last true freshman to score 500+ points in a season (555)
HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYSÂ
Head coach Krista Gerlich and her Lady Raider squad open an eight-game homestand (the longest in program history) on Thursday night. In fact, the Lady Raiders have taken their last road trip of the 2022 calendar year. Tech next hits the road for a two-game road swing Jan. 5-8. The eight-game homestand is the longest in program history, one game longer than the seven-game stand that Tech had during the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2019-20 seasons.
Â
LITTLE JAZZ, BIG IMPACT:Â Â
Redshirt freshman Jasmine Shavers exploded for 34 points and 14 rebounds in two games last week. Announced as the Big 12 Freshman of the Week this week (Nov. 28), Shavers set career-highs in points and rebounds in back-to-back games. On Friday against MTSU, Shavers scored 13 before following up with her first career 20-point performance on Saturday.
ANOTHER FIVE? SURE WHY NOT:Â
Head coach Krista Gerlich is a perfect 4-0 as the Lady Raider head coach when a game goes an extra session. Wednesday's overtime victory over Colorado extended an 11-game winning streak for Gerlich in overtime games.
