Tech will close out a two-game mini homestand
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders host West Virginia Wednesday night for the penultimate game of the regular season. The Lady Raiders and Mountaineers will tip at 7 p.m. at United Supermarkets Arena.
With a victory, the Lady Raiders can pull into a tie with the Mountaineers in the crowded Big 12 women's basketball standings with just three games to play.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
MATCHUP: Texas Tech (10-15, 3-11 Big 12) vs. West Virginia (11-13, 4-10 Big 12)
LOCATION: United Supermarkets Arena
TIME: 7 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT:
The Lady Raiders fell to the Kansas Jayhawks 71-68 on Saturday, despite leading by 13 at the break. Vivian Gray got off to a fast start on Saturday, scoring 18 of her 23 points in the first half, as Tech led 38-25 at the break. In the third quarter, Kansas scored 15 of the first 19 points and ending up outscoring Tech 24-9 in the period. In the fourth, KU scored the first seven points to take a game-high 56-47 lead. Gray and the Lady Raiders used a 10-2 run to grab a 59-58 lead with 2:27 to play. The final 2:30 featured six lead changes, as the two teams continued to battle back and forth A Gray and-one with :34 left gave Tech its final lead at 68-67, but KU used a layup, a block and two free throws to hold on for a 71-68 win.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS:
West Virginia enters Wednesday's matchup just one game ahead of the Lady Raiders in the crowded Big 12 standings. WVU has lost its last five contests, and has been without leading scorer KK Deans since Jan. 29. Deans scored 15 points in the first matchup. WVU will also likely be without Kari Niblack. Niblack was injured in the first half of the Mountaineers contest against UT, and did not play in the second period. AWVU's last victory came back on Feb. 2 at TCU (70-62). Since that game the Mountaineers have lost at OU in double OT, to KU, at Baylor, at Kansas and to Texas. WVU swept the Horned Frogs and have recorded victories over the Lady Raiders and OSU.
