This weekend’s meet marks the first away meet for Tech
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech track and field program travels a limited group as the Red Raiders head to Albuquerque, N.M., for a two-day meet hosted by the Lobos at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Meet Schedule
The meet will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday and 9:45 a.m. for those competing in the multi events. Tech will not be traveling student-athletes competing in multis so Friday kicks off for the Red Raiders at 4 p.m. and 10:20 a.m. on Saturday. Times are in Mountain Standard.
In The Polls
In the second installment of the USTFCCCA Indoor Rankings released Monday afternoon, the men's team was slotted No. 2, improving one spot, while the women's team slid to No. 6. Last week, it marked the first time in Tech track & field history that both programs were ranked inside the top 5.
Last Time Out
The Red Raiders hosted the Texas Tech Open & Multis last weekend. Some notable highlights included Sidney Sapp taking first overall in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.88m (6'-2") as she set a new facility record while moving into second all-time in the Tech record book – top mark is 1.89m (6'-2.25) set by Zarriea Willis in 2018. For her efforts, Sapp was named the Big 12 Athlete of the Week for the first time in her Red Raider career Wednesday afternoon.
In the heptathlon, Gary Haasbroek finished fourth overall, scoring 5,699 as he moved to second all-time in Tech history. The men's 200m saw Ashton O'Conner finish with the top mark of 20.77. As it stands now, three Red Raiders find themselves in the top 9 of the NCAA in the 200m – Courtney Lindsey (5th, 20.63), Jacolby Shelton (7th, 20.77) and O'Connor (9th, 20.84). Each time reflects a 0.44 time conversion due to altitude.
On The Lookout
Vashaun Vascianna will make his long-awaited Texas Tech debut. Regarded as one of the top young sprinters in the world, Vascianna placed second in the 100m hurdles at the U20 World Championships this past summer with a personal best mark of 13.25.
Ruta Lasmane will be competing for the second time this season. In the season opener off a short approach in the triple jump, Lasmane registered a mark of 13.85m (42'5.25") which is fourth in the NCAA. In the pole vault, Chloe Wall will be looking to improve on her season-best mark of 4.28m (14'-0.5") which sits 13th in the NCAA. Colton Naffziger will be back in action as well. Naffziger etched back-to-back PR marks at the Red Raider Open (Jan. 21) as he topped out at 5.33m (17'5.75") – 16th in NCAA.
