Dimitrios Azoidis clinched both the doubles point and the match Saturday
SALT LAKE CITY – The Texas Tech Red Raiders tennis program snapped a mini two-match losing streak Saturday, rolling past the Loyola Marymount Lions 4-1, at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders (4-2) received strong performances from Dimitrios Azoidis and Ilgiz Valiev who both went 2-0 on Saturday.
Azoidis teamed up with true freshman Piotr Pawlak to earn a 6-4 victory over the Lions (1-4) that clinched the doubles point, before sealing the Red Raider victory with a tough 7-6 (3), 7-5 victory over Daniel Moreno.
Not to be outdone, Valiev also was perfect Saturday, as the Russian joined forces with Franco Ribero to dispatch LMU's duo of Manoel De Alencar and Rana-Roop Bhullar, 6-3. The other doubles match ended on serve at 5-4.
In singles action, Valiev continued his strong day, dropping John Otico four and three. The victory brought the Red Raiders to within one point of the match.
Other highlights included No. 1 Isaac Arevalo winning zero and three on court one, and Azoidis' tiebreaker aided victory on court six.
HEAD COACH DANNY WHITEHEAD:
"This was a good win today. LMU is a tough team, and they always seem to give teams trouble and pull off good wins. Today was a good 4-1 win, and it was good for us to find a way to battle adversity and get a win. We were uncomfortable at times, but we found a way to get it done. We play Utah tomorrow, and we know that's going to be a big challenge. We'll have to really play well in every area to win. We'll have to be sharp mentally and remain focused. We also need to do a good job of controlling our emotions and compete hard because it's going to be tough. But we're excited for the opportunity. #WreckEm"
UP NEXT:
