Program record 16-run inning propels win for Tech
March 15, 2022 | Baseball
The Red Raiders collected a season-high 25 hits in the effort. Eight different batters logged multiple hits, led by Zac Vooletich (3-for-7), Cole Stilwell (3-for-6), and Drew Reynolds (3-for-3) who each registered three to lead the team. Vooletich and Ty Coleman led the way in the RBI department, both manufacturing four. In addition to the hits, the base pads were even busier as Tech drew 13 walks, and two more were given a free pass on a hit-by-pitch.
The fireworks in the second inning that set the stage ended with 16 runs, using 11 hits and seven walks to put Texas Tech firmly ahead, 17-0, after scoring one run in the first inning.
The lineup batted around twice in the second, and Owen Washburn, Parker Kelly, and Hudson White each had three plate appearances in a half-inning that lasted just more than 41 minutes. Of the 21 at-bats, seven were two-RBI base hits. Dillon Carter (watch), Vooletich (watch), Washburn (watch), and Jace Jung (watch) each had two-run doubles, Kelly a two-run single (watch), and Vooletich in his second at-bat hit a two-run single while Coleman was responsible for the game's only home run (watch), a two-run homer.
The game featured 16 different position players. Freshmen Sam Hunt (watch) and Lauden Brooks recorded their first career hits, respectively. Reynolds, who owned one hit in three career at-bats produced a 3-for-3 night as he entered in the fourth for Jung. Easton Murrell, who had not played in the last six games nursing an injury, saw action late in the designated hitter spot and went 1-for-2.
Chase Hampton earned the win, allowing two hits in four innings of scoreless work. Brandon Beckel and Bo Blessie each tossed two innings of scoreless baseball as well. Blessie did not allow a hit while Beckel allowed one. Through the first eight innings, the pitching staff produced six innings of 1-2-3 work facing the minimum of three. Andrew Devine closed the game, surrendering the Lobos' two runs but both were unearned as the frame had a pair of errors that aided the scoring.
