Texas Tech competed in the NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech track and field team will start its outdoor season this weekend (Fri-Sat) at ACU as the Wildcats host the eighth-annual Wes Kittley Invitational at Elmer Gray Stadium.
The field events begin Friday with the hammer and shot put at 3:00 p.m. as the 1500 kicks off the running events at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, the javelin throw commences the meet at 9:30 a.m. with the track events not starting until 2:05 p.m. with the 4x100 relay.
Kittley ACU File
During Kittley's tenure at ACU (1983-99), he was the head coach of the women's track and field program where he won his first NCAA Division II outdoor title in 1985. He would capture back-to-back NCAA titles in '86-'87 and once again in '88. In 1993, ACU elected to combine both the men and women programs and dubbed him the men's head coach, claiming the NCAA Indoor title that same year.
Overall, Kittley guided his alma mater to a record 29 NCAA Division II national team titles, 16 World Championships qualifiers, 10 Olympic qualifiers, and a trio of US National Champions.
Recapping the Indoor Season
Both the men and women teams placed second at the Big 12 meet, highlighted by Jacolby Shelton taking home the 60 and 200 titles – Highest Point Scorer of the Meet. Overall, TTU produced 11 individual winners and traveled 10 men and eight women to the NCAA Indoor Championships as the men tied Arkansas for the most entries going in at 11.
Tech was one of six teams to claim 20 or more All-America honors, including eight First Team members (top eight placers). Thursday afternoon, Calvin Robinson – assistant coach for sprints and hurdles – was named the Men's Assistant Coach of the Year for the Mountain Region.
On the Lookout
While the majority of the Red Raiders who competed last weekend at the NCAA indoor meet sit out, we'll see a few First Team All-Americans from the outdoor season in 2021 start at ACU. Malik Metivier will go in the 400 hurdles while Seasons Usual throws the discus. Last season in this meet, she took home first with a PR throw of 59.85m (196-4). Meanwhile, Gabe Oladipo – placed third in the weight throw at NCAAs – is entered in for the hammer throw.
