April 20, 2022 | Softball
Texas Tech falls to 15-4 in the series after the loss.
ABILENE, Texas – A five-run third inning proved costly for the Red Raiders as Texas Tech (21-21) fell 7-2 to Abilene Christian (20-23) Wednesday night in Abilene.
The Wildcats outhit the Red Raiders eight to three as Tech was held without a hit after the third inning.
Back-to-back hits from Arriana Villa and Payton Jackson put two runners in scoring position to start the game. Both runs came across on a sac fly from Ellie Bailey and a throwing error that allowed Jackson to come home on the play for the early 2-0 lead.
ACU answered in the home half of the inning with a two-run home run to left field from Miranda Lista to tie the game at two after one inning.
The Wildcats grabbed a 7-2 lead in the bottom of the third off four hits, two walks and an error that allowed two runs to score. A single and a couple of walks loaded the bases for ACU. A single brought in one run and another single scored one more but a throwing error on the same play brought in two more and moved a runner to third. One more run would score on a single to left field to complete the five-run inning.
Tech went down in order the next three innings and managed just one more base runner in the game.
Erna Carlin (7-5) was credited with the loss, pitching 2.1 innings, giving up six runs, five earned, on four hits. Kendall Fritz pitched 2.2 innings in relief allowing one run on four hits. Olivia Rains sat the Wildcats down in order in the sixth.
