Recap: Tech falls in pitcher’s duel at Baylor
April 22, 2022 | Softball
The 1-0 loss was the first at Baylor since 2017.
WACO, Texas – Texas Tech (21-22, 4-9) dropped game one of the series 1-0 to Baylor (24-18, 3-7) on a windy Friday night at Getterman Stadium in Waco.
It was a pitcher's duel as both teams combined for five hits. Baylor pitcher Dariana Orme pitched the complete game for the Bears allowing just two hits and no runs, striking out five and walking one. Kendall Fritz went toe-to-toe with Orme, giving up three hits, striking out a couple and walking a couple.
After three and two thirds scoreless innings, the Bears scored the first run of the game, taking advantage of some Red Raider mistakes. A two-out single put Josie Bower on base for Baylor, Bower stole second and moved to third on an errant throw on the play. A wild pitch allowed Bower to score before a diving catch from Payton Jackson ended the inning.
The Red Raiders put two runners on base for the first time in the game in the top of the fifth, looking to even the game at one. Arriana Villa drilled a ball to left field that was caught on a line for the third out of the inning, ending the Tech scoring threat.
Tech put the tying run on third in the sixth as Jackson singled to lead off the inning and moved two bases on a sac bunt from Carson Armijo. Armijo's bunt advanced Jackson to second and Jackson slid safely into third as the base was left uncovered as the infield crashed to cover the bunt. Ellie Bailey flew out to shallow left field, not deep enough to score the run and a ground out to short ended the inning.
