Texas Tech will have 16 members of its track and field program alone earn their degrees this weekend
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech Athletics will have 51 of its student-athletes receive either their undergraduate or master's degrees this weekend during commencement ceremonies at United Supermarkets Arena.
Nearly every Texas Tech athletic program has at least one graduate this weekend with the track and field and football programs leading the way with 16 and 14 student-athletes earning their degrees, respectively. The weekend will be a special one for several members of Wes Kittley's program with multiple graduates walking the stage in between events as Texas Tech is also hosting Big 12 Outdoor Championships starting Friday at the Terry and Linda Fuller Track and Field Complex.
"This will be a weekend many of our graduates will remember for the rest of their lives," Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. "Our department is so proud of these student-athletes for the countless hours of time and effort they have poured into their work as student-athletes, both in competition and in the classroom. We congratulate them and their families for this tremendous accomplishment."
Texas Tech will have two additional letterwinners walk the stage as a pair of former Red Raider running backs in Taurean Henderson and Tre King will both receive their diplomas this weekend. Henderson and King both took advantage of the Degree Completion Program that Texas Tech Athletics offers to former scholarship student-athletes who are close to completing their degree.
Henderson, who closed his Red Raider career in 2005 as the school's all-time scoring (414 points) and receptions (302) leader, returned to the university this past fall to complete his degree in communication studies. King, meanwhile, played two seasons for the Red Raiders from 2017-18 before returning to finish his degree in university studies.
"We could not be prouder of the academic and athletic successes that our graduates have achieved throughout their time here," said Deedee Brown-Campbell, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academic Excellence. "They continue to exemplify the determination and persistence that is needed to be Fearless Champions and am excited to see the impact they will make in this world as proud graduates of Texas Tech University."
Commencement ceremonies begin at 2 p.m. Friday with the College of Arts and Sciences. More details on Texas Tech's commencement schedule and streaming information can be found here.
