Day six featured a food tour and a 78-53 victory over Crete Select
CHANIA, Crete – Head coach Krista Gerlich and the Lady Raiders capped a busy day six of the Greek foreign tour on Saturday that included an all-day food tour and the third and final foreign tour game against Crete Select.
The day got off a to an early start, as members of the Lady Raider program departed the hotel in Crete at 9 a.m. sharp.
Once aboard the bus, the members of the travel party climbed the hills and mountains of Crete for the first of four specific stops.
The first stop was at an olive oil processing plant, where the Lady Raiders were given a hands-on tour of the plant that showed the specific process for cultivating olive oil and the various other olive-based products.
After learning about the process of turning the olives into the various products, the plant provided samples of various olive oils, pastes and other products.
The second stop of the tour was at a homemade cheese facility, that made various local cheese and yogurt products.
As the morning turned to afternoon, the squad made its final of three vendor stops at local bakery where homemade breads and oil were again sampled.
The tour concluded with a traditional Greek lunch that included a homemade Greek Salad (tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers), homemade tzatziki sauce, a local eggplant dish, homemade chicken and traditional Greek potatoes.
The members of the program that chose to partake in the experience returned to the hotel in Chania around 4:30 local time.
At 6:15 p.m. all the members of the travel party climbed back on the bus to make the short trip to gym where game number three was held.
Texas Tech got off to another strong start on the defensive end, as the Lady Raiders used the strong performance on that end of the floor to race out to a 15-9 lead after 10 minutes of play.
Tech also won the second quarter, using a game-high 23 points in the second period to take a 37-23 lead after 20 minutes.
In the second half, Crete Select made a run, cutting the Tech lead to just 10, but a sequence of four straight forced turnovers were converted to layups that quickly increased the Lady Raider lead to 68-49.
The Lady Raiders led by posts Jazmaine Lewis and Kilah Freelon, cruised to a 78-53 victory.
UP NEXT: Tomorrow the players, coaches and staff will embark another boat/beach day, this time to the world famous Elafonisi Beach. Known for its iconic pink sand and beautiful aqua blue water, the Lady Raiders will have the opportunity to swim, play with various water toys and relax on the luxurious day beds.
COACH SPEAK (HC KRISTA GERLICH): "Our kids are excited because it's been a good week. We've played with a lot of energy and unity which was fun to see. But they also got a lot of valuable playing time and learned how to win together which is important. They have a lot of fun playing together and we were able to play a faster tempo. We pressed and had a lot of exciting plays. I know our girls are excited to be able to do that in front of Lady Raider Nation."
