LUBBOCK, Texas – What started in the qualifying draw for junior Olle Wallin, ended with his first ITF men's singles finals appearance and first ever professional title at the West Texas Pro Tennis Open.
On Sunday afternoon, Wallin had a tall task ahead facing Tennessee's Blaise Bicknell, who came into the tournament as the two-seed and ranked No. 115 by the ITA. Wallin took the challenge headfirst, only dropping six games in the match to keep the trophy in Lubbock with a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
The Sweden native played a lot of tennis this week as he started with two matches in qualifying, winning both of those by 6-0, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-2 scores to earn a spot in the main draw.
Once there, Wallin never let up. He won his first-round match by a score of 6-2, 6-4, then defeated No. 51 and Red Raider teammate Isaac Arevalo in the second round, 6-1, 6-1.
Wallin moved on to the quarterfinals and defeated Jaycer Lyeons, 6-4, 6-2, then overtook six-seeded Alex Michelsen in the semifinals, 7-6 (10), 6-3.
With his straight-set victory against Bicknell in the finals, Wallin completed his perfect tournament run as he never lost a single set in the competition. In addition, Wallin and Piotr Pawlak also made a semifinals appearance in doubles.
The Red Raiders continue their fall slate as a few players will travel to New Mexico for the Albuquerque 15k.
