No. 6 Tennessee beats Tech in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – In Texas Tech's first dual match of the year, the Red Raiders fell to the No. 6-ranked Tennessee Volunteers, 7-0, on Monday evening at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
Tennessee jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after taking the matches at courts two and three to secure the doubles point. Over on court one, both Dimitrios Azoidis and Reed Collier were locked in a battle with Pat Harper and Shunsuke Mitsui, tying their match at 5-5 before the doubles point was won by Tennessee.
Needing four singles victories to win the match, the Red Raiders had a lot of work ahead of them to beat the No. 6 team in the country.
The Vols were able to get two wins on courts one and six when No. 59-ranked Mitsui defeated Collier, 6-3, 6-0, then Angel Diaz took down Piotr Pawlak, 6-2, 6-2.
With a 3-0 advantage, Tennessee would clinch the match when No. 86 Blaise Bicknell defeated Tyler Stewart, 7-5, 6-1, on court four.
On court three, No. 81 Emile Hudd added to the Vols' score after he beat Franco Ribero by a score of 6-4, 6-2.
Then on court five, Boris Kozlov would fight back a late, second-set surge from Sebastian Abboud to win the match, 6-3, 6-4.
Azoidis took on Johannus Monday, who ended last season ranked No. 16, on court two. The Red Raider battled the Vol, picking up the Red Raiders' lone set win of the evening. Azoidis forced Monday into a super tiebreak, but would fall in a tough match, 6-4, 7-6 (11), 0-1 (6).
The Red Raiders look to bounce back tomorrow when they take on the Charlotte 49ers at 12 p.m. CT in Knoxville.
