MANHATTAN, Kan. – Two Red Raiders totaled double-digit digs, but the Kansas State Wildcats defeated Texas Tech in three sets, 20-25, 21-25, 10-25, on Friday night at Morgan Family Arena.
Both Maddie Correa and Brynn Williams led the Red Raiders (10-17, 3-12 Big 12) with 11 digs each in the match for their 16th and 10th double-digit dig games, respectively, this season. Graduate Caitlin Dugan posted a team-best in kills for the 13th time this year after tallying 10 against the Wildcats (15-10, 9-7 Big 12). Setter Reese Rhodes had a 26-assist performance while adding seven digs and freshman Reagan Engler led Tech with three blocks in the match.
Tech took a 2-1 lead in the first set on an error from K-State and a slam from Engler. The Wildcats then answered with a 5-1 run for the 6-3 advantage. Kansas State maintained the lead as they went up 19-11 later in the set. However, the Red Raiders responded with a kill from Williams to spark a 4-0 run and force a Wildcat timeout. Tech cut into K-State's lead, but the Wildcats held on for the first set win, 25-20.
The second set started in Tech's favor when both Williams and Emily Merrick put down kills for an early 2-0 lead. Both teams traded points up until 5-5 when K-State went on a 7-0 run for the 12-5 advantage. At 14-7, Tech posted four-consecutive points highlighted by back-to-back aces from Simone Overbeck to cut the deficit to three. The Wildcats kept their lead, but the Red Raiders came within two points thanks to a Williams kill at 23-21. However, K-State won the next two to take the set, 25-21.
The Wildcats began the third set on an 7-1 run before Tech took a timeout. The Red Raiders got some points back on kills from Dugan and Rhodes, mixed in with some K-State errors to make it 13-6. The Wildcats answered by winning 10 of the next 11 points before Tech stopped the run with a kill from Currie Marusak to hold match point. K-State would claim the next point, though, and take the set and match with a 25-10 score.
