SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In back-to-back seasons, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders had a doubles team qualify for the ITA National Fall Championships as Metka Komac and Avelina Sayfetdinova were a 5-8 seed in the draw.
The No. 15-ranked Lady Raider duo took on Grand Canyon's Natasha Puehse and Santa Strombacha in the first round. The Grand Canyon pair took an early lead after winning set one by a 6-4 score. But the Lady Raiders rallied back to even it up with a 6-3 second set.
In the super tiebreak, GCU took a 9-5 lead. However, Komac and Sayfetdinova saved four match points to tie it at 9-9, then won it by a 13-11 score to advance in the competition.
The Lady Raider tandem then won decisively in the Round of 16 over Ohio State's Luciana Perry and Irina Cantos Siemers. Tech won the first set, 6-4, before posting a commanding, 6-2, second set to move on to the quarterfinals.
The Lady Raiders impressive run would come to an end in the Elite 8 when they fell to the one-seeded and No. 2 nationally ranked pairing of Reese Brantmeier and Elizabeth Scotty (UNC), 6-3, 6-0.
Up next, Tech will travel to Waco, Texas for the Big 12 Fall Championships on Nov. 10-12 hosted by Baylor.
