Lady Raiders to compete at Maui Classic

MAKAWAO, Hawaii – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders are making their second road trip as they are set to face both the Tulsa Golden Hurricane and the Oregon State Beavers on Dec. 19-20 in the Maui Classic at Seabury Hall. Tech will play the Golden Hurricane on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 9:00 PM CT and then will play the Beavers the following day, Dec. 20 at 11:30 PM CT.
Texas Tech (11-0), who is receiving votes in the latest AP Top-25 Poll, has played Tulsa only once in program history as the Lady Raiders defeated the Golden Hurricane by a 72-49 score on Feb. 19, 1980. Oregon State and Texas Tech have played five times in program history with Tech holding a 4-1 all-time series record over the Beavers. Their last meeting was on Dec. 21, 2012 with Tech winning, 66-48.
The Lady Raiders are coming off a dominant, 76-35 victory against the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Dec. 13 in front of an Education Day record crowd with over 13,000 in attendance. In the game, there were four Lady Raiders in double figures – Jasmine Shavers (15), Bailey Maupin (11), Loghan Johnson (11) and Kilah Freelon (10). Freelon also posted her third double-double of the season after adding 11 boards against the Cardinals.
Freelon is having herself an impressive stretch of gameplay as she has gone 12-of-12 in the last two games combined and has made 13 field goals in a row dating back to HCU on Dec. 1. She also set the program record for the most makes without a miss after she connected with all eight of her field goal attempts against Sam Houston on Dec. 5.
In addition, the Texas Tech sophomore class is off to a hot start this season. Three sophomores lead the team in scoring, all in double-figures, with Maupin leading the way as she totals 15.4 ppg, followed by Shavers with 15.2 ppg and Freelon with 10.0 ppg. The sophomore class accounts for 43 of Tech's 72 3-pointers (.597) as well as 213 of Tech's 429 rebounds (.497).
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Tulsa is 8-3 on the season with key wins against Clemson (74-64), Texas Southern (82-45) and Florida (72-64). Their three losses came against TCU (50-82), No. 25 Mississippi State (58-102) and Oral Roberts (87-93). The Golden Hurricane are led in scoring by Temira Poindexter (21.4 ppg) and Delanie Crawford (17.3 ppg). Hadley Periman leads Tulsa with 7.5 rebounds per game, followed by Crawford with 5.9. Katia Gallegos totals a team-best 36 assists through 11 games and both Crawford and Poindexter are right behind with 26 apiece.
Oregon State is receiving votes in the latest AP Poll as they are 8-0 on the season. They have key victories against Villanova (63-56), Western Kentucky (76-52) and Santa Clara (80-52). As a team, the Beavers total 79.4 points per game while holding opponents to 55.6 ppg. They also average 21.1 assists per game, 47.9 rebounds per game and 5.4 blocks per game. Raegan Beers leads the team in scoring with 19.1 ppg and is the only Beaver averaging double figures. However, there are three players who average above nine points per game in Kelsey Rees (9.8), Talia von Oelhoffen (9.3) and Timea Gardiner (9.1). Beers also averages a double-double every game as she totals 12.1 rebounds per game.
