February 23, 2023 | Women's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – Competing in the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala., this weekend, the No. 47 Lady Raiders are set to face the Yale Bulldogs in the first round of competition on Friday, Feb. 24 at 12:30 PM in the O'Connor Tennis Center.
With matches spanning over two days, the Lady Raiders (6-3) will play for the first time since Feb. 18 after they faced Arizona and Kansas.
Tech played Arizona first, who is ranked 31st in the ITA rankings this week, and took care of business. The Lady Raiders would easily take the doubles point, only giving up one game in the two wins. Then, provided singles victories at courts four, five and six to sweep the Wildcats. In the following match, Tech took on Big 12 foe and host team, Kansas, losing by a 4-0 score.
During the week, Yekaterina Dmitrichenko went undefeated in singles after picking up wins at courts four and five. She now leads the team with 14 total singles wins and is an undefeated 4-0 in dual matches. Both Cristina Tiglea and Arina Oreshchenkova lead the team in dual singles wins with five apiece as Oreshchenkova is also undefeated.
In doubles, Tiglea and Olivia Peet are heating up as the duo clinched two doubles points last week while also posting a team-high five dual wins, all at court two. In addition, both Tiglea and Metka Komac are the lone Lady Raiders ranked by the ITA as they check in at No. 40.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Coming into the match, No. 58 Yale is no stranger to the Lady Raiders as both teams, in only their two meetings in program history, have faced each other in the first round of the Blue Gray Classic. Yale, who lost the previous two matchups against Tech dating back to 2015, is 5-3 on the season, with its three losses coming against Columbia, South Carolina and Furman. Some of their wins have come over Rutgers, Indiana and Penn.
