Red Raiders pick up win No. 10 with a 4-2 victory over Ducks
March 16, 2023 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – It came down to the wire against the No. 56-ranked Oregon Ducks, but the No. 40 Texas Tech Red Raiders prevailed with a close, 4-2, victory on Thursday night at the Student Tennis Center.
The Red Raiders (10-6) got what was a crucial point in doubles against the Ducks (8-6). First, the duo of Isaac Arevalo and Lorenzo Esquici, who were paired together for the first time this season, rolled through their match with a 6-1 win against Jesper Klov-Nilsson and Avi Shugar at court three. The No. 45 pair of Dimitrios Azoidis and Reed Collier would drop a tough match to No. 8 Joshua Charlton and Quinn Vandecasteele, 6-3, at court one to even the score.
It was up to Piotr Pawlak and Franco Ribero at court two, who were taking on the tandem of Ivailo Keremedchiev and Ray Lo, to win their match and secure the doubles point. The Red Raider duo was able to fight off the Duck pairing to get the win by a 6-4 score, giving Tech its 11th doubles point of the year.
In singles, No. 123-ranked Olle Wallin continued to add to the Red Raiders' points after getting his sixth-straight win at court one by a 6-2, 7-5 score against Charlton. The Ducks quickly tied things up, however, when they won back-to-back matches at courts two and four.
Tied at 2-2, Azoidis posted his second-consecutive victory with a straight-set win against Luke Vandecasteele at court six, 7-6 (4), 6-3. The last remaining matches were into their third sets when Tech took the lead at 3-2.
In dramatic fashion, it would once again be Esquici who would clinch the match for the Red Raiders at court five. The freshman won his first set against Lo, 6-4, before falling in the second by a 7-5 score.
Lo would take a 4-2 lead in set three, giving him the momentum needed to close out the match and tie things up for Oregon – but Esquici wouldn't let that happen. The Brazil native pushed back, winning five of the remaining seven games, to claim his match, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (2). He has now clinched half of Tech's 10 victories.
When the match was won, Arevalo was in a battle at court three against Klov-Nilsson. Forcing a third set with a 6-3 set two win, Arevalo would go down 3-0 in the third before rallying back and tying it up at 3-3 when play was stopped.
The Red Raiders are set to face the BYU Cougars tomorrow at 6 p.m. in Eugene.
