March 06, 2023 | Baseball
HOUSTON – No. 24 Texas Tech found itself on the wrong end of a 16-inning, 5-hour, 34-minute marathon Sunday night and into Monday morning, falling 4-2 versus No. 15 Texas A&M on the third and final day of the Shriners Children's College Classic at Minute Maid Park. It was the most innings played in the tournament's 23-year history.
It was the longest game, by innings, the Red Raiders have competed in since March 3, 2015, at home versus Abilene Christian.
Behind a Dillon Carter two-out two-RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, the Red Raiders carried a 2-1 lead into the top of the ninth inning. Texas A&M rallied to tie the game, thanks to four walks - the fourth brought home the game-tying run. Damian Bravo started the frame while Garrett Crowley closed it needing three pitches for a punchout to escape the inning.
Kyle Robinson tossed the next six innings in a pseudo-start. He kept the Aggies off the scoreboard while allowing just three hits between the 10th and 15th innings. He led Tech in the pitch count category, tossing 79 versus Sunday's starter Taber Fast's 73 pitches over the first four frames.
The Aggies benefited from a pair of errors in the 16th with Jacob Rogers on the mound. Texas A&M led the 16th with a single. It was leadoff baserunners that the Red Raiders escaped the majority of the night, but could not dodge it the final time. The Aggies' leadoff hitter reached base in 10 of the 16 innings Sunday night.
The two teams combined to leave 33 baserunners on base. The Red Raiders left 17 on base while the Aggies left 16. Texas Tech outhit Texas A&M, 10-7, but the Red Raiders issued 16 walks versus the Aggies' staff allowing seven.
Texas Tech leadoff man Nolen Hester led the squad with three hits (3-for-7) while Gavin Kash also had multiple hits with two (2-for-6).
