Texas Tech earns 7th-straight postseason bid
May 29, 2023 | Baseball
LUBBOCK, Texas – For the seventh consecutive time, Texas Tech baseball has been invited to compete in the NCAA postseason. It was announced Monday morning, live on ESPN2, the Red Raiders would be headed to the Gainesville Regional as a 3-seed.
The Red Raiders (39-21) were selected as an at-large team, joining host and 1-seed Florida (44-14), also the national 2-seed, along with 2-seed UConn (43-15) and 4-seed Florida A&M (29-28). The SEC's Florida and Big East's UConn were at-large selections like the Red Raiders while Florida A&M was an automatic qualifier by virtue of winning the SWAC conference tournament title, defeating Bethune-Cookman 9-6 in its championship game.
Texas Tech has previously played both Florida and UConn. The only matchups with the Gators were in the College World Series, on two different occasions in 2016 and 2018. If the Red Raiders see Florida A&M, it would be the first-ever meeting.
The 64-team field had 34 at-large bids along with 30 automatic qualifiers. TCU represented the Big 12's auto-bid, the winner of Sunday's conference championship game.
The regional on the road is the second straight for Texas Tech as it prepares its quest for its fifth College World Series appearance under head coach Tim Tadlock. Of the Red Raiders' four trips to the CWS, three came by way of Lubbock while the third started in the state of Florida, at Coral Gables in 2014.
The 2023 selection marks the 17th NCAA tournament appearance for the Red Raiders in program history, and eighth under Tadlock over his 11 seasons at the helm.
