Lady Raiders open Spring season against Liberty at home

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders are set to open their 2023 spring campaign at the Falls Tennis & Athletic Club on Sunday, January 21 at 11 a.m. against the Liberty Flames.
The Lady Raiders had an extremely productive fall season, earning themselves 42 singles victories as well as 27 in doubles. The No. 5 pairing of Avelina Sayfetdinova and Metka Komac highlighted the fall season with an appearance in the ITA Fall National Championships quarterfinal and captured the ITA Texas Regionals doubles title over Texas' Tanya Sasnouskaya and Sabina Zeynalova in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2.
The duo of Andreea Lila and Jermine Sherif added to Texas Tech's fall dominance by winning the Big 12 Fall Championship doubles title. The pairing of Lila and Sherif were just as impressive on the singles front by tallying eight victories and seven wins, respectively, which led the team. Cristina Tiglea captured the most ranked singles wins for Tech with three while sophomore Yekaterina Dmitrichenko followed up with two. Komac and Sherif also each had one ranked singles victory of their own.
Last season, the Lady Raiders earned a record of 14-11 with a 4-5 record in the Big 12 under then-first year head coach Adam Herendeen. Tech was awarded the three-seed in the Durham Regional where they lost to No. 20 UCLA, 1-4. Over the course of last season, the Lady Raiders notched notable wins over No. 20 Kansas, No. 31 Arizona and No. 40 Baylor.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Liberty Flames come to Lubbock for their second match of the year as they open their season with a contest against Queens on Jan. 19. Last season with long time coach Jeff Maren, the Flames went 17-9 and had an appearance in the Atlantic Sun Conference semifinals where they lost to the North Florida Ospreys, 0-4. They are returning eight letterwinners and have two freshmen newcomers.
