Tech defeats Flames, 6-1

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders captured their first victory of the spring season at the Falls Tennis & Athletic Club on Saturday, January 21 against the Liberty Flames, 6-1.
The Lady Raiders started off quick against the Flames in doubles with court three's Andreea Lila and Jermine Sherif jumping out to a 5-0 lead against Liberty's Esther Lovato and Sadie Daavettila and won their match, 6-1.
On court two, Cristina Tiglea and Mariya Polishchuk jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Liberty's Marina Davtyan and Maria Turchetto captured the next two games to make it 3-2. Tiglea and Polishchuk made a run of their own to rout the Liberty pairing, 6-2, and clinch the first doubles point of the season for Tech to set them up for a 1-0 lead.
Metka Komac and Turchetto started the trend of tight first sets after starting their first set four all. After that, Komac rattled off two straight to claim the first set, then dominated the second set, 6-4, 6-1. With her win, Texas Tech earned their second point of the contest to take a 2-0 lead.
Court two's first set was a battle throughout with Polishchuk and Lovato trading points throughout. With the set being tied at five, Polishchuk broke through Lovato's serve and held her own to earn herself the first set victory. Polishchuk continued to heat up and win her last set, 7-5, 6-2, to grab Tech the 3-0 lead.
Court one featured the Lady Raider's No. 69 Tiglea and Liberty's Romero where Tiglea captured the first set in solid fashion before devolving into a grind in the second set. Romero grabbed two of the first three games in the second set before Tiglea rattled off 3 straight of her own. The set continued to be a back-and-forth affair until a broken serve led to Tiglea winning the match, 6-2, 7-5, and clinching the winning point for Tech, 4-0.
Avelina Sayfetdinova dominated her first set against the Flames' Davtyan, winning it with a bagel, 6-0. The second set on court three was competitive early with the first two games being traded before Davytan rattled off a win in the second set. Sayfetdinova rallied back to grab Tech a 5-0 lead with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 score.
On court five, Lila grabbed the lead early against Nguyen and never looked back. She worked briskly through Nguyen, serving her a bagel and winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, to give the Lady Raiders a 6-0 advantage.
The Texas Tech Lady Raiders will be traveling to Charlottesville, Virginia for the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Friday, January 26 at 12 PM. They will play either Georgia Tech or Wisconsin the following day Saturday, January 27 at a time to be announced.
