January 21, 2024 | Men's Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders fell to the Abilene Christian Wildcats, 3-4, on Sunday evening at the Lubbock Country Club.
Starting with doubles, the duo of Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak got the sole victory for the Red Raiders (2-1), winning 6-4 at court three against the pair of Merse Deli and Jose Rastrojo. However, ACU (1-2) was able to claim the doubles point after taking the matches at the top two courts to lead, 1-0, in the contest.
Reed Collier stayed hot in singles play to start the dual season, winning his match at court two in straight sets by a 7-6 (4), 6-4 score against Dario Kmet. In the second set, Collier had his work cut out for him as he was down 1-4. But, the No. 114-ranked player's resiliency was on full display as he won five consecutive games to win the match and put a point on the board for Tech.
No. 71 Olle Wallin started off his match at court one dropping the first set, 6-4, to Daniel Morozov. He flipped the second set around, winning with a 6-2 decision, but Morozov would come back to take the third-set tiebreaker by a 7-6 (5) score to give ACU a 3-1 advantage.
Freshman Jonas Gundacker came to play, winning both of his sets in dominant fashion, 6-4, 6-1, at court four to give him his second dual singles win of the season. Riding on the momentum of his first collegiate victory last night, freshman Niksa Arsic came out hot against ACU's Dennis Dutine. Arsic won set one handedly, 6-3. Then, down 1-2 in the second set, Arsic would win the next five games to record another point for the Red Raiders, tying the overall match score at 3-all.
It all came down to the court five duel between Abboud and Deli to decide a victor. Abboud gave Deli all he could handle in the first set, narrowly losing 6-4. With both teams looking on, the court five competitors turned up their intensity. In a hard-fought match to the end, Abboud came up just short in the second set, 6-4, as Abilene Christian claimed the victory, 4-3.
Up next, Tech will be on the road against the University of San Diego in Los Angeles on Saturday, January 27 for ITA Kickoff Weekend.
