January 27, 2024 | Women's Tennis
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders fall to 1-2 on the year with a loss to the No. 24 Wisconsin Badgers, 4-2, in the consolation round of ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Boar's Head Sports Club on Saturday evening.
At court three in doubles, Wisconsin's (2-1) Taylor Cataldi and Rosie Garcia Gross came out hot against Texas Tech's Jermine Sherif and Andreea Lila putting themselves up 2-0 quickly. Despite the adversity, the pairing of Sherif and Lila put up two of their own and traded games to create a 3-3 tie midway through the set. However, Wisconsin would hold on to win it, 6-3.
Court two featured big runs that decided the set. Texas Tech's Cristina Tiglea and Mariya Polishchuk started out quick with a 2-0 lead against Wisconsin's Xinyu Cai and Ellison Reynoldson. The Badgers pair retaliated with four of their own to put the Lady Raiders down, 2-4. Tech and Wisconsin traded a pair of games before Wisconsin put the match away, 3-6, and clinched themselves the doubles point.
Texas Tech's No. 5 pairing of Avelina Sayfetdinova and Metka Komac showed out at the top court by earning themselves a 4-0 lead against the No. 50 pairing Maria Sholokhova and Alina Mukhortova. The match, however, went unfinished with the Tech duo holding a 5-4 lead.
In singles, court two was a tight match throughout between Polishchuk and Mukhortova with each battling to tie the first set up. Despite Polishchuk's best efforts, the Badger ultimately bested the Lady Raider, 6-4, 6-3, to create a 2-0 advantage for Wisconsin.
Sherif, on court six, was dominant in her first set against Garcia Gross. Despite losing the first game, she won the next eight over two sets before giving up another. The middle of the second set became a close battle between the two before Sherif ended the comeback bid to win her first dual singles match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, and get Texas Tech its first point of the match.
Court three saw Sayfetdinova facing off against Cataldi in an even match up. Despite forcing a multitude of deuces, Cataldi was able to capture the victory, 6-4, 6-4, and win Wisconsin its third point.
As the Badgers held the 3-1 advantage, heads turned over to court one, which featured a ranked matchup between No. 69 Tiglea and No. 67 Sholokova. The beginning set was a grind with the first six games being split between the two to create a 3-3 tie. Tiglea then won the next three games to claim the first set. Under similar circumstances in the second set, Tiglea would earn herself a ranked win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, and capture Tech's second point of the contest, 3-2.
Court four was home to a near comeback in the first set by Komac against No. 87 Cai. Down 2-5 in the first set, Komac roared back to force a twelfth game in the set. Despite the comeback falling short with Cai winning set one, 7-5, Komac kept up the momentum and quickly raced to a 3-0 lead in the second set, eventually forcing a third with a 6-2 win. Despite a heroic effort to force a 4-4 tie in set three, Cai would clinch the match with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 score and the Badgers would best the Lady Raiders, 4-2.
Court five showed off Lila's efficiency where she made quick work of Wisconsin's Ariel Johnson in their first set and took set one in decisive fashion, 6-2. Johnson herself would have a good second set, winning it by a 6-3 score. In set three, Lila captured an early 2-0 lead. The two players would then split games with a pair of broken serves that led to a 5-5 tie. However, the match would eventually end unfinished as Johnson went ahead in the third set, 6-5.
Up next, the Lady Raiders travel to Auburn, Ala., on Sunday, February 4 to play in a doubleheader. Tech first plays Auburn at 11 a.m. before moving on to Jacksonville State at 5:30 p.m.
