Tech fights against No. 8 Kansas, falls in four

The Red Raiders gave the Jayhawks all they could handle in a four-set battle
LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech volleyball (11-11, 3-7) fell to No. 8 Kansas on Wednesday night by scores of 25-13, 27-25 and 25-20 while taking the second set 25-20. Mia Wesley and Brynn Williams led the way both picking up double-doubles as Williams recorded a new season high in kills with 17.
Williams 17 kills was the most of the match and was followed closely by Wesley with 13. Emily Merrick finished with seven kills as Reagan Engler and Aliyah McDonald combined for 10 kills out of the middle blocker position. McDonald also got in on six blocks to finish with 8.5 points.
Katelyn Cochran and Hanna Borer both finished with 19 assists. Borer added two kill and six digs as well while Cochran got in on three blocks.
Maddie Correa and Emily Contreras held down the back line recording 18 and 14 digs, respectively. Wesley and Williams recorded 13 and 12, respectively to record double-doubles.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Jayhawks (19-1, 10-0) came out hot in the first set. They hit. 294, the highest of any set in the match, and limited Tech to just six kills while siding out 71 percent of the time. Kansas had a balanced attack as four players finished with 10 or more kills including Ayah Elnady and Caroline Bien who picked up double-doubles along with setter Camryn Turner who finished with 42 assists and 14 digs.
Set two saw the Red Raiders answer back with a blistering offensive performance, recording 17 kills and hitting .375 percent. Tech jumped out to a 7-3 lead before the Jayhawks came back to tie it up at 10-10. The Red Raiders then went on a 10-6 lead to blow it open and eventually win 25-20. Williams recorded 10 of her 18 kills in the set and hit .600 to lead the Red Raiders to a win.
Tech came out of the intermission hot and went up 6-2 before Kansas called a timeout. The Jayhawks settled back into the match but didn't get things going until late in the set with Tech up 23-20. Kansas forced a win-by-two situation and would nab the final two points thanks to four kills from Bien.
Set four was back-and-forth as it saw eight ties but just one lead change which came when Kansas took its first lead of the set at 19-18. Kansas went on a 6-1 run from that point to secure its 10th straight win of the season. Aliyah McDonald had an excellent set for the Red Raiders as she was in on four-straight points which included three blocks and a kill which forced a Jayhawks timeout at 11-7.
