Red Raiders sweep day one of match play
October 07, 2024 | Men's Golf
HOCKLEY, Texas – The Texas Tech men's golf team opened the Big 12 Match Play Tournament, defeating Baylor and TCU, at Houston Oaks Country Club on Monday. The two wins place the Red Raiders atop their four-team pool with one match left on Tuesday morning before the tournament advances to the next stage. There are four pools, with each pool play winner earning the right to compete to be the Big 12 Match Play champion.
Spearheading Monday's two team wins for the Red Raiders were senior Charlie DeLong and freshman Connor Graham, who won each of their matches. Calum Scott, who played only the afternoon session, won his match, for one of Texas Tech's five individual wins on the day.
The Red Raiders started Monday with a 2-1-2 win over Baylor. DeLong had a three-hole stretch midway through his round to go ahead by five, 11 holes into the round. The match was won, 5&4. Graham also won his match convincingly, 5&3. While Ben Gregg fell in his pairing, Sean Keeling and Tim Wiedemeyer earned ties to push the Red Raiders ahead for the narrow victory.
In the Monday matinee, Texas Tech was powered again by DeLong and Graham and used Scott's win to secure a 3-2-0 win against the Horned Frogs.
DeLong continued his strong play, winning in early fashion once again with a 4&3 victory, as he ended his day playing just 29 of 36 possible holes with the two wins. Graham won by a wide margin as well, 4&3, while Scott dispatched his opponent 2&1. Scott never trailed in his match, setting the tone with a birdie on his first hole of the day. He led by as many as four before earning the win.
Texas Tech faces Colorado on Tuesday morning, action starts at 7:45 a.m. Should the Red Raiders advance as the Pool D Champion, they would face the Pool AÂ Champion on Tuesday afternoon for the right to play in Wednesday's Championship Match.
