Toppin earns Big 12 Newcomer of the Week
November 25, 2024 | Men's Basketball
LUBBOCK – Texas Tech sophomore JT Toppin has been named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after dominant performances in a three-game week for the Red Raiders that began with a 24-point, 12-rebound double-double against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at home and then producing 15 points in a win over Syracuse at the UKG Legends Classic. His most captivating showing came in the loss to Saint Joseph's though, finishing with 22 points and a career-high 18 rebounds. Toppin recorded 12 offensive rebounds in the game, which was the second most in program history.
Toppin, who earns the first Big 12 weekly award for Tech this season, leads the Red Raiders with 19.8 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and three double-doubles through six games played. He's currently shooting 48-for-77 (62.3 percent) from the field. During the three-game week, Toppin averaged 17 points and 11.7 rebounds per game for the Red Raiders who improved to 5-1 on the season. He has scored in double figures in all six games this season. His 12 offensive rebounds against Saint Joseph's were only the third time in the Tech record book where a Red Raider reached double-figure offensive rebounds and just behind Will Flemons who had 15 against Houston in 1990. Flemons also had the only other double-figure offensive game, grabbing 10 offensive rebounds against Texas in 1992.
A Dallas, Texas native, Toppin is in his first season at Texas Tech after transferring from New Mexico where he played his freshman season. He earned Mountain West Freshman of the Year, All-Mountain West Second Team and was a nine-time Mountain West Freshman of the Week selection last season. Through 42 games played in his career, Toppin has produced 564 points, 388 rebounds, 80 blocks and has 15 double-doubles.
Toppin and the Red Raiders return to action this week against Northern Colorado at 7 p.m. on Friday at United Supermarkets Arena. The program comes into the game on a 34-game non-conference home winning streak with four home victories this season.
