
Lady Raiders head to Arizona State

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders play in their first road conference game of the season against the Arizona State Sun Devils on Wednesday, January 1 at 5 p.m. CT at the Desert Financial Arena. The all-time series between Texas Tech and Arizona State is tied at 4-4, with the Sun Devils winning the last contest on November 17, 2013 by a score of 85-77.
Junior Bailey Maupin has been on a rampage the past few games - scoring 20+ points in the last three contests and doing so for the first time in her career. Over the last three games, Maupin has averaged 24.7 points per game, 4.0 rebounds per game and 3.0 assists per game, leading the Lady Raiders in points and assists. In addition, she recorded a career-high of 28 points in the Big 12 opener against Houston after going 10-for-18 from the field and 4-for-5 from the three. She is now three points away from 1,000 in her career.
Junior Sarengbe Sanogo recorded her first career double-double to open Big 12 play. In the game against Houston, Sanogo totaled a career-best of 12 points and 10 rebounds to collect her first double-double. She also shot 6-for-7 from the field and tallied a team-leading two blocks en route to the Lady Raiders' first conference win of the season.
Redshirt junior Denae Fritz has had back-to-back games with a new season high in points. At Arkansas, the Maryville, Tenn., native shot a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and 2-for-2 from the three, totaling eight points in the win. Against Houston, Fritz, once again, went 3-for-3 from the field and 2-for-2 from the three, making her last six field goals and four 3-pointers going into the third quarter. She ended the game shooting 80 percent from the field (4-5) and 66 percent from three (2-3) for a new season best in points with 10, which was also her first double-figure performance this season.
The Lady Raiders are forcing 21.36 turnovers per game which ranks 37th in the NCAA and second in the conference. In addition, the Lady Raiders rank 50th nationally with 10.8 steals per game. The Lady Raiders have forced 20+ turnovers in eight games this season so far and have forced at least 20 or more in six of the last 10 games.
Texas Tech is second in the Big 12 and 38th in the NCAA with 27.8 bench points per game. The Lady Raiders had their most bench points against Missouri State, totaling 47 points in the game, more than half of the total points scored by the team that game (72). Texas Tech has also scored 20 or more bench points in six of the last seven contests. The Lady Raiders currently average 5.8 blocks per game, which ranks 12th nationally and fourth in the Big 12. In addition, Sanogo ranks 19th in the nation and third in the Big 12 with 26 total blocks.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Arizona State Sun Devils are 6-7 overall and 0-1 in conference play this season. The Sun Devils have picked up key wins over SMU, Oregon State and Penn, while dropping games to Utah, San Francisco and Kentucky. As a team, Arizona State averages 72.7 points per game and is giving up 73.7 points per game. Shooting 41.4 percent from the field, the Sun Devils average 39.2 rebounds per game and 13.3 assists per game. There are four Sun Devils who total double-figure scoring – Tyi Skinner (17.3), Jalyn Brown (16.8), Nevaeh Parkinson (11.2) and Jyah LoVett (10.5). Leading the way on the rebounding side is Kennedy Basham with 6.5 per game, followed by Jazion Jackson with 6.4 and Parkinson with 6.1.
