Klara Hurtova’s 1-under-par 71 led the Red Raiders to a top-six finish as they concluded the NEXUS Collegiate in the Bahamas.
NASSAU, Bahamas - Led by a 1-under-par 71 from Klara Hurtova in Wednesday's final round, Texas Tech finished in a sixth-place tie at the NEXUS Collegiate at Albany Golf Club. Hurtova and Maja Ambrosiak led the Red Raiders' trip to the Bahamas with top 20 finishes on the individual leaderboard.
Similar to round two, the course at Albany Golf Club proved to be very difficult for each of the 11 teams competing, with an average round three score of 76.33. Texas Tech recorded a 13-over-par 301 in round three, capping the tournament 28-over-par (892). The tournament winners from Tulsa, who were 15-over-par after 54 holes, fired a round three low of 4-over-par, which UTSA and Houston also matched.Â
For the second consecutive day, just eight individual players shot below par, and once again, a Red Raider was among those eight players. Hurtova followed up Kylee Loewe's round two 1-under-par 71 with her own in round three. The freshman from the Czech Republic began her day at hole No. 10, recording a birdie at hole No. 14 following four straight pars. Hurtova was able to fight off a double bogey at hole No. 16 and a bogey at hole No. 17 by firing four birdies on her final eight holes to wrap up the tournament. Boosted by her strong third round, Hurtova was the highest-placed Red Raider on the individual leaderboard, finishing tied for 11th.
In addition to Hurtova, Texas Tech's countable scores toward the team total came from Ambroziak, Gala Dumez, and Lauren Zaretsky. Ambroziak concluded Wednesday with a respectable 2-over-par 74, over two strokes lower than the round average, to finish the tournament tied for 19th place. Dumez finished her tournament with a 5-over-par 77 and Zaretsky wrapped up with a 7-over-par 79.
Another impressive round for Tech came from Cameron Freund, one of three Red Raiders participating in the tournament as individuals. Freund's three birdies allowed her to finish round three with an even-par 72. Thanks to her strong round three performance, Freund concluded the tournament tied for 52nd, which was the highest finish of the three individuals from Tech.
The Red Raiders will return to action on Feb. 26, as they participate in the Chevron Collegiate in Houston, Texas. As part of Chevron's commitment, the 2024 Chevron Collegiate individual champion will be presented with a place in the Chevron Championship Pro-Am and an invitation to the pairings party.
