LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech is set to play its 25th game of the season and will look to top a Top-10 for the second time this week when it travels to play No. 10 Iowa State at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.
"We are really excited about going to Iowa State to play," Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. "I have a tremendous amount of respect for what T.J. Otzelberger is doing with their team. They are super physical defensively, they play extremely hard, they share the ball, just a great team. A great collection of athletes who are great basketball players. That's a tough combination and a reason why they're leading the conference. Their environment is special so we'll have to play our best basketball to win."
The Red Raiders (18-6, 7-4 Big 12 – T3) are coming off a 79-50 win over No. 6 Kansas on Monday night in Lubbock, while the Cyclones (19-5, 8-3 Big 12 – T1) extended their winning streak to three with a 68-59 win at Cincinnati on Tuesday night in Ohio. Tech is on a two-game winning streak that followed a three-game losing streak and Iowa State has won eight of its last 10 games. ISU is 14-0 at home. Tech is 2-4 on the road with Big 12 road wins at Texas and Oklahoma.
Despite being knocked from No. 23 to unranked on Monday afternoon, the win that night over KU bumped the Raiders up to No. 22 in Kenpom and No. 25 in the NCAA NET Rankings. The win over KU also makes Tech 15-2 this season when not ranked. The Cyclones are at No. 8 in the NCAA NET Rankings. As a program, Texas Tech has beat a Top-10 team in 10 straight seasons after its win over No. 6 Kansas on Monday. The Red Raiders are now looking for back-to-back Top-10 wins for the second time in program history after doing it for the first time in the 2022 conference slate with a home win over No. 6 Kansas and then at No. 1 Baylor. Tech has 16 wins over Top 10 teams during the past 10 seasons and 31 in program history.
Darrion Williams has led Tech in scoring in the past two games, including going off for a career-high 30 points where he was 12-for-12 from the field, 4-for-4 on 3-pointers, and 2-for-2 at the free-throw line against Kansas. He also provided 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season after he had 13 points and 13 rebounds in the win over UCF last Saturday. Williams is averaging 10.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Pop Isaacs leads the Red Raiders with 16.5 points per game which ranks fifth in the Big 12 coming into this weekend. A sophomore from Las Vegas, Isaacs also leads Tech with 58 3-pointers made this season. Joe Toussaint leads the Red Raiders with 4.2 assists per game and is averaging 12.4 ppg., while senior Warren Washington is coming off a game against Kansas where he had 11 points and six rebounds. Washington is third in the Big 12 with 7.7 rebounds per game and third with 1.6 blocks per game.
Iowa State is led by head coach T.J. Otzelberger who is in his third season with trips to the NCAA Tournament in his first two seasons already on the resume. The Cyclones are second in the Big 12 by limiting opponents to only 62.0 points per game and on offense, rank fourth by scoring 78.6 points per game. Keshon Gilbert leads ISU with 13.8 points per game, while Ames native Tamin Lipsey is scoring 13.3 points per game and leads the team with 127 assists and 68 steals. Milan Momcilovic is adding 12.1 points per game with a team-best 45 3-pointers made and Curtis Jones comes off the bench to provide 10.0 ppg. and is second on the team with 42 3-pointers. Gilbert has added 98 assists and 40 steals. Lipsey and Jones led the Cyclones with 15 points each in their win over Cincinnati with Jones going 3-for-6 on 3-pointers for the team that was only 5-for-18 from beyond the arc. Lipsey is currently fourth in the Big 12 with 5.5 assists per game and fifth with a 2.5 assist-to-turnover ratio. He finished the game in Ohio with four assists while Gilbert and Robert Jones each had 12 points. Iowa State limited Cincinnati to only 19-for-50 shooting and forced 25 turnovers.
"You can't hold the ball against them," McCasland said. "You have to be the aggressor if you want to have success. You have to find a way to puncture their defense quickly. They have really good ball pressure and physicality. It really is impressive how they squeeze you defensively. It is a concern. Not turning the ball over for us is 1A, B, C, D, E, and F in the game plan up there. When you turn the ball over it leads to offense and they are as good as there is scoring off the defense. You don't take timeouts with you, so you use them. Two, the connected nature of our team is important. When things aren't going great, it's how well you believe in the plan you have in place. The closeness of this group lends itself to a way to withstand momentum that happens on the road."
The Red Raiders and Cyclones are meeting for the only time in the regular season with the new Big 12 schedule matrix. Tech has won 8 of the last 10 meetings with the two programs splitting last season with the home team winning each time. Tech lost 84-50 on Jan. 10, 2023, in Ames before an 80-77 overtime win Jan. 30, 2023, in Lubbock. Tech trailed that game by as many as 23 points before storming back for the win.
