Texas Tech takes on No. 21 Baylor in Waco

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Lady Raiders are set to play in a nationally televised game as they travel to Waco, Texas to take on the No. 21 Baylor Bears this Sunday, February 17 at 3 p.m. in the Foster Pavilion. This is the first game of the season that Tech will be nationally televised as the game will be on ESPN2 with Sheryl Swoopes and Brenda VanLengen calling the game.
Texas Tech (16-10, 5-8 Big 12) is coming off a tough loss to Oklahoma State last Saturday at the United Supermarkets Arena. In the game, sophomore Kilah Freelon recorded a double-double when she totaled 13 rebounds and 10 points. Sophomore Jasmine Shavers also posted a double-figure outing with 16 points on the night.
Currently, the Lady Raiders are 29th in the NCAA with a 77.0 free throw percentage, while ranking 38th with 14.54 free throws made per game. Texas Tech's defense is holding opponents to just 61.2 points per game and forcing 19.15 turnovers per game which is top-50 in the country.
Leading the team in scoring is Shavers with 14.9 points per game, followed by Bailey Maupin with 13.8 points per game. On the rebounding side, there are three Lady Raiders averaging over five boards per game in Freelon (5.7), Jordyn Merritt (5.6) and Shavers (5.2). In addition, Maupin leads the team with 93 assists and Merritt leads with 27 blocks.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The No. 21 Baylor Bears are coming into the game with an 18-6 overall record and a 7-6 record in conference play. Some key wins include No. 4 Utah (84-77), No. 5 Texas (85-79), Oklahoma State (72-60) and No. 22 West Virginia (65-58). Some losses have recently come against No. 23 Oklahoma (73-84), BYU (66-78) and Texas (55-67). The Bears are sixth in the country in assists per game with 19.5 while also ranking 27th nationally with a 77.0 field goal percentage. The Bears have three players averaging double-figure scoring in Dre-Una Edwards (12.1), Sarah Andrews (11.5) and Darianna Littlepage-Buggs (11.1). Three Bears are also leading the team with six or more rebounds per game in Aijha Blackwell (8.0), Littlepage-Buggs (7.2) and Edwards (6.5).
