Cornhuskers defeat Red Raiders in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. – Senior Olle Wallin recorded a straight-set singles win at the top court, but the Texas Tech Red Raiders lost to the No. 59 Nebraska Cornhuskers, 4-1, on Friday night at the Dillon Tennis Center.
The Cornhuskers (7-4) went ahead early after grabbing a 6-2 doubles win at court three. The Red Raiders (5-5) were then able to tie it up with a victory at court one as No. 39 Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak defeated the duo of Nic Wiedenhorn and Anton Shepp by a 6-4 score.
It all came down to court two for the point as Lorenzo Esquici and Olle Wallin were taking on the Husker pairing of Calvin Mueller and Lars Johann. The Red Raiders were down 1-3 early but came back to tie it at 3-all. Both teams would go back-and-forth to follow, eventually forcing a tiebreaker. In the breaker, Nebraska went ahead 3-1, but Tech tied it at 3-3 with two-straight points. The two teams continued to trade blows until the Cornhuskers clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 (10) win.
In singles, Nebraska jumped out to a 3-0 lead after collecting two singles wins. First, Mueller was able to defeat Esquici at court two, 6-2, 6-3, before Lars Johann overtook Niksa Arsic at court four by a 7-5, 6-1 score. No. 85-ranked Wallin cut into the deficit whenever he took down Shepp at court one by a couple of 6-4 scores. However, the Cornhuskers clinched the match when Rudi Christiansen downed Abboud at court six, 6-3, 6-2.
Up next, the Texas Tech Red Raiders continue play in Lincoln, Neb., with a match against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Saturday, February 24 at 2 p.m.
