Tech falls to South Florida in San Diego

SAN DIEGO – The Texas Tech Red Raiders opened the Ed Collins Spring Classic tournament with a tough loss to the South Florida Bulls, 4-2, on Friday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Complex.
No. 75 Texas Tech (7-7) earned its 10th doubles point of the season after winning on courts one and two. First, the duo of Reed Collier and Takeyasu Sekiguchi would take a 4-1 lead over Tom Pavlekovich-Smith and Davide Tortora at court two. They would only give up one more game to the Bulls (9-9) pair before winning the match, 6-2.
Clinching the doubles point was No. 32-ranked Sebastian Abboud and Piotr Pawlak at court one after defeating Erik Grevelius and Alvin Tudorica. Both teams traded games until the Red Raiders went up 5-4. Abboud and Pawlak would break serve in the following game to claim the 6-4 victory for the Red Raiders. This win pushes their dual doubles record to 10-1 and 6-1 at the top court.
South Florida evened the match up with two quick singles wins. First, Tom Pisane defeated Lorenzo Esquici on court three, 6-4, 6-3, before Grevelius tied things up with a win over No. 122 Collier by a 7-5, 6-2 score.
No. 117 Wallin and Tudorica were battling it out at court one. The Bull would win set one, 6-3, before Wallin answered right back with a 6-3 set of his own. The Red Raider went up 4-1 in the final set and kept the momentum to win it, 6-1, and give Tech its second point of the match.
However, the tie was short lived as USF retook the lead after Bruno Oliveira overtook freshman Niksa Arsic at court four, 6-1, 7-6 (3), moving all eyes to the remaining courts at five and six. At court five, Pawlak and Elijah Cham were competing, while Abboud and Agustin Cuellar were playing at court six. Both courts went into third sets, but USF would secure the 4-2 victory after Cham defeated Pawlak, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Texas Tech will continue play at the Ed Collins Spring Classic tomorrow, time and opponent are still to be determined.
