Dumez earns third career Top-10 at Big 12 Championship
April 20, 2024 | Women's Golf
Led by a strong third-round performance and top-five finish from Gala Dumez, Texas Tech finished the Big 12 Championship in fifth place at Houston Oaks Country Club.
HOCKLEY, Texas – Texas Tech's Gala Dumez led the Red Raiders for a third-straight day at the Big 12 Women's Golf Championship, securing a top-5 finish in Saturday's final round by shooting a 3-under-par 68. Her effort helped the team shoot the lowest round of the 13 Big 12 programs at Houston Oaks Country Club, a 3-under-par 281, which aided the Red Raiders climb to fifth place in the final standings.
The 68 that Dumez fired matched a season-low round for the senior. She registered a pair of 4-under 68s earlier this season; it also matched the lowest score recorded in Saturday's final round, joining Iowa State's Liyana Durisic. The strong third-round effort propelled Dumez to a final tournament score of 1-under-par, making her one of just six individuals to finish the tournament below par, which was good for a fifth-place tie out of the field of 65 players.
Saturday's result marks the third time Dumez has finished inside the top 10 of the Big 12 Championship, adding to a first-place finish in 2021 and a tie for sixth place in 2023.Â
Klara Hurtova joined Dumez as a top 20 finisher, having turned in an impressive 2-under-par 69 in round three to close out her tournament. The freshman from the Czech Republic closed her first Big 12 Championship with a 54-hole 2-over-par 215 en route to an 11th-place finish, the second top-20 finish of her career. Hurtova's tournament total of 14 birdies was tied for the second most among the field.
Tech also received round three scores countable towards the team total from Lauren Zaretsky and Maja Ambroziak, who each fired a 1-over-par 72 – both Big 12 tournament lows for the pair. After a difficult opening nine holes consisting of four bogeys, Zaretsky responded with birdies on three of her final four holes to conclude the tournament at 6-over-par and tied for 21st place. Ambroziak followed a similar path, recovering from a four-bogey opening nine holes by firing a bogey-free 2-under-par back nine. She ended her tournament at 11-over-par and tied for 37th place.
Thanks to rounds of 68 (Dumez), 69 (Hurtova), and a pair of 72's (Ambroziak/Hurtova), not only did the Red Raiders log the lowest team round on Saturday, but were one of just two teams to shoot under par on Saturday, joined by the tournament's champion, No. 11 Texas, who fired a 2-under-par. The Longhorns, who wrapped up an impressive weekend 1-under-par and atop the team standings, bested the second-place team, Iowa State, by 12 strokes.Â
Seeking their seventh straight NCAA appearance, the Red Raiders will hope to hear their name called during the NCAA Selection Show on April 24 at 1 p.m. live on the Golf Channel.
