Red Raiders participate in two tournaments this weekend

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders are on the road for two tournaments as a handful of players will compete at the Battle in the Bay Classic (Sept. 12-15) in San Francisco and the Waco Fall Tennis Classic (Sept. 13-15) hosted by the Baylor Bears.
Both Tyler Stewart and Lorenzo Esquici will travel to California for the Battle in the Bay Classic hosted by the California Tennis Club. Other participating teams in the tournament are TCU, California, Michigan State, Arizona, Arizona State, Pepperdine, Oklahoma, UCSB, San Diego, UCLA, Boise State, Illinois, Pacific and more. Players are competing for two singles wild cards at the Tiburon Challenger and the Fairfield Challenger.
The main draw of singles and doubles will begin at 11 a.m. CT on Thursday, Sept. 12. Singles will be made up of 32 players and doubles will be a draw of 16 teams.
Heading to the Waco Fall Tennis Classic is newcomer Felipe Pagnacco, Takeyasu Sekiguchi, Brody Nejedly-Krall and Niksa Arsic. Some schools competing in Waco are Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Baylor, LSU, UTSA and Oklahoma State. Â
Last week at the Midland Racquet Club Invitational, Stewart had two singles wins and appeared in the quarterfinals of the singles main draw. Esquici picked up two wins in the singles back draw. In doubles, Arsic and Nejedly-Krall defeated Texas' Lucas Brown and Evan Burnett to move on to the quarterfinals.
Standing out in Midland was Stewart, who was victorious in a comeback victory, defeating LSU's Brock Anderson 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. He then topped a second SEC opponent in Arkansas' Connor Smillie, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (5), in three sets, as well.
The Red Raiders will begin the weekend on Thursday, Sept. 12 in San Francisco and Friday, Sept. 13 in Waco. These upcoming matches will be the first ITA-sanctioned events of the season.
