
Sekiguchi makes singles flight finals in Waco

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders competed in two tournaments to begin the fall season as the team traveled to both San Francisco for the Battle in the Bay Classic and to Baylor for the Waco Fall Tennis Classic this weekend. Tech completed the tournaments with a combined total of seven singles wins and three doubles victories.
Battle in the Bay Recap
Two Red Raiders – Lorenzo Esquici and Tyler Stewart – traveled to the West Coast for the Battle in the Bay Classic in San Francisco to play some of the nation's top players. In the singles main draw first round, both Stewart and Esquici dropped their matches. Stewart faced Pacific's Tiago Silva, falling by a 3-6, 3-6 score and Esquici lost in a hard-fought match to Pepperdine's Chris Papa, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6.
In the singles consolation draw, the Red Raiders once again faced tough competition. Stewart was taking on 3-seeded and No. 37-ranked Pedro Vives of TCU, who took home the 2024 NCAA team championship, losing a tough contest by a 6-4, 6-3 score. Esquici faced Matthew Forbes of Michigan State, who earned a US Open wild card this year, falling in a 6-0, 6-1 match.
In doubles, the Texas Tech pairing posted a first-round victory against Pacific's Silva and Justas Trainauskas by an 8-5 score. They would fall in the quarterfinals to 4-seeded and No. 25-ranked duo Theo Dean and Carl Emil Overbeck of California, 6-8.

Waco Fall Tennis Classic Recap
Four Red Raiders made their way to Baylor for the Waco Fall Tennis Classic this weekend. On the first day, three of the four Tech players were victorious in singles. Competing in the White Draw, Takeyasu Sekiguchi was able to defeat Texas A&M's Ethan Silva in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-2, to advance in his flight. Sophomore Niksa Arsic downed home-team Baylor's Louis Bowden in a grueling, 3.5-hour match, winning by a score of 7-5, 3-6, 7-5, to move on in the Green Draw. In the Gold Draw, newcomer Felipe Pagnacco earned his first win as a Red Raider after beating Oklahoma State's Ty Wunderlich in two sets, 6-4, 7-5.
On day two in doubles, the pairing of Brody Nejedly-Krall and Sekiguchi advanced in the draw due to a walkover by Texas A&M's Ethan Silva and Tiago Pires. They would fall in the next round to the 2-seeded duo of Tiago Pires and Ethan Silva (Texas A&M) by a 6-2 score. The tandem of Arsic and Pagnacco advanced in the back draw due to a walkover by 2-seeded Miguel Alonso and Tiago Torres of Texas A&M.
On the final day of the competition, the Red Raiders added two more singles wins to their resume as Nejedly-Krall beat Tulsa's Gus Tettamble, 7-5, 6-4, then Arsic defeated Tulsa's Timothy Carlsson Seger by a 6-2, 6-3 score. Sekiguchi finished second in his draw after dropping his finals match to 2-seeded Reiya Komagata of the Golden Hurricane.
Up next, select players will head to Tulsa, Okla., for the ITA All-American Championships from Sept. 21-29.
